Job Title:  Coating Engineer


Job Location:  Initial training to be done in Latrobe, PA and final placement will be in our Nashville, TN COE


Job Description:  The primary focus of this position will be on carbide and ceramic insert coating manufacturing processes.  This position will day to day coating operations, troubleshoot process deviations and will assist Quality and respective Competency Teams as required.  This position will also support North American insert manufacturing to identify opportunities and improve processes through the application of new equipment and systems, improved programming techniques, process evaluation/improvements, material handling, and other engineering related areas.  Responsible for engineering related aspects of PVD / CVD processes in a manufacturing environment to include process (material science), equipment, and quality analysis.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Daily control and improvement of CVD / PVD and related processes
    • Process support: Inspection of critical coating characteristics, historical analysis of equipment operation, quality, etc.
    • Equipment support: Advanced preventative maintenance, technical troubleshooting (including electrical / electronic)
    • Procedures, working instructions: Development, implementation, training, and auditing
  • Project Management: Develop project plans and budgets, team selection, assign activities, conducting progress reviews, launching corrective actions, assuring all EHS guidelines and requirements are met and reporting progress to plant management.
  • Provide on-site leadership for trouble-shooting, quality improvements, complex problems; Lead teams in a systematic approach to resolution using data-driven analysis / decision making; Follow-through actions through implementation and validation.
  • Ability to develop understanding of complex and evolving processes as required to lead, implement, and sustain systems improvements
  • Work with purchasing and outside vendors to obtain necessary capital equipment. Develop the preparation of functional specifications and the evaluates alternatives (attending tool shows, seminars, and various training sessions is required to keep up with state-of-the-art developments) for equipment supporting CVD / PVD operations
  • Prepare progress, status and forecast reports on multiple key aspects of the assigned area of responsibility
  • Evaluate skill levels of technicians, develop training materials, coach and train team members for improving team and equipment performance.


Education and Experience Requirements:


Education:  Minimum MS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Solid State Physics, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline is required.  At least 3 years of industrial experience in a PVD or CVD coating operation is required.


Skills / Experience              

  • Experience with PVD or CVD thin-film deposition or precision component fabrication tools, including fundamental understanding of operation, process controls and programming (Vacuum Systems, Gas Delivery / Distribution, Control Systems) is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in materials, materials science and/or materials chemistry, particularly for engineering coatings is required.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of electrical / electronic systems is desirable.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Must be able to work well in a team environment and effectively communicate throughout the organization.
  • Surface treatments related to CVD coating deposition is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles is desirable.
  • Experience in statistical data analysis and is highly desirable. (i.e. Minitab)
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt preferred
