Process Engineer, Gorilla Glass

The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Seeking a highly capable Process Engineer for advancing sheet glass manufacturing processes. Candidate must have a strong foundation in Process Engineering and expertise in data analysis and experimental methods. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with globally distributed researchers, engineers across multiple divisions, and Corning’s commercial organizations.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical oversight of the sheet glass manufacturing process
  • Utilizes process engineering skillset (process data analysis, root cause, hypothesis testing, etc.)
  • Provides support to plant engineering & operations during day-to-day troubleshooting on running glass manufacturing lines
  • Leads process startup activities on new glass manufacturing lines, and supports process development
  • Oversees tactical execution of process improvements on running glass manufacturing lines
  • Executes plans for mid-to-long term yield, attribute quality, and cost improvements
  • Maintains a system mindset, builds understanding of interfacing processes
  • Interfaces with equipment teams and provides technical guidance to meet process requirements
  • Captures and documents fundamental knowledge, process learning, and IP


Travel Requirements:

  • 30% - 50% to Corning, NY and Asia as required, to participate in and direct process experiments, support installation and start-up of production lines.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Full time (40 hours per week), but great flexibility required given the globally dispersed nature of the team and aggressive project timelines. Teleconferences are likely during early morning or evening hours. Night/weekend flexibility is expected during process startup activity.


Required Education:

  • B.S. or equivalent in engineering or physical sciences


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years (5+ preferred) progressive experience in process engineering
  • Experience working in manufacturing and  industrial environments encompassing all stages of innovation (I-V)
  • Proven track record of solving difficult process problems
  • Experience working in manufacturing plants and industrial research facilities 
  • Demonstrated experience working across multiple cultures and with a globally dispersed and diverse team


Technical Skills:

  • Strong background in process engineering fundamentals
  • Expertise in any or all of the following: heat transfer, glass forming, mechanics, discrete material conveyance, robot processes, packaging
  • Demonstrated expertise in design of experiments and analysis of data
  • Problem solving skills demonstrated through troubleshooting on product or process related issues
  • Experience with OSI PI data systems.
  • Highly skilled in empirical analysis to inform numerical modeling and process optimization.


Non-Technical Skills:

  • Ability to influence technical direction via communication and relationships from a remote location
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, changing priorities and changing requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Well-developed skills in working across multiple cultures and on a globally dispersed and diverse team
