Sr. Research Technician, Chemistry

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

This position will report directly to one senior scientist, but will support two scientists. This job will be directly involved in projects within the Organic Technology Directorate and support of manufacturing and business issues when needed.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: Daily activities could include:

  • Performing wet chemistry experiments (distillation, solvent precipitation, polymerizations, mechanistic/kinetic experiments, formulation preparation).
  • Obtaining analytical measurements from technical experts (FT-IR, HPLC, GC/MS) and some interpretation.
  • Assisting or running reactive extrusions and injection molding. 
  • Clean room esperimentation and maintenance UV cure chemical reactions.
  • Administrative duties such as data entry, safety documentation, equipment inventory and back up when needed.

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): minimal 

 

Minimal Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hrs/week

 

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with FT-IR, microscopy, basic chemistry lab technique (solution preparation, quantitative analysis, basic organic chemistry understanding)
  • Work safely and independently in a lab setting
  • Ability to quickly learn new instrumental measurements
  • Clearly describe and record experimental results
  • Prepare summary graphs and tables
  • Ability to work in a multi-division role (including some biological materials)
  • Administrative skills: Excel, Powerpoint, Safety Documentation and some minor scheduling   

 

Education and Experience:

  • BS or AS/AAS with relevant experience

 

Desired Skills:

  • Flexibility
  • Familiarity with polymer testing and analytical chemistry
  • Familiarity Extrusion and injection molding
  • Clean room protocol and maintenance

 

Soft Skills:

  • Good oral and written communication skills necessary as report writing and administrative support required
