Interconnect, Cable Engineer

The Mechanical Engineering Group provides innovative mechanical design solutions for advanced technology prototypes utilizing state-of-the-art design techniques, materials and fabrication processes.  The group works on a wide variety of prototype development efforts that span multiple Laboratory mission areas and various equipment platforms, including ground, maritime, airborne, and spaceborne.  Areas of expertise include large structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, mechanisms, precision engineering, opto-mechanics, electronics packaging, electrical interconnection design, and dynamic characterization of structures.  Engineers from the group are critical to all aspects of prototype development beginning with conceptual design, continuing through detail design, system integration and test, and concluding with environmental performance testing. The group is the Engineering Division's center for 3D computer-aided design, mechanical design tools, design methodologies, and design data knowledge management for enabling robust prototype development and efficient project execution. Example projects include airborne and space-based laser communications systems, high energy laser systems, space optical payloads, biological agent detectors and identifiers, and large radar antenna systems.



The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and participate in the development of ground-based, airborne, and space-based systems.  Responsibilities will include:  engineering design of system level interconnection configurations, including RF, high speed I/O, and power; development of cabling and harness design requirements and procurement specifications; and engineering project oversight of interconnection system requirements, cable/harness/component documentation, procurement, fabrication and testing.  The position may require occasional travel to meetings, vendors, and field sites.

A BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is desired, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in system level interconnection design.  An AS degree plus 10 years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a BS.  Demonstrated ability in electrical interconnection design, selection and specification of components, including cables, wire, shielding and connector types, to meet project signal integrity and EMI/EMC requirements is required.  Knowledge of military and industry standards for the design, specification, fabrication and procurement of electrical interconnect cables, harnesses and components is also required. Familiarity with ASME and IEEE design standards is desirable. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills.
