About the Job


Major job functions for this position include the following.

1) Laboratory experiments - 60%
- Perform multiple complex scientific procedures effectively, efficiently and independently.
- Meet project specifications on time.
- Track multiple concurrent projects.
- Maintain a required high level of cleanliness and refined processing technique to ensure samples are not contaminated.
- Troubleshoot experiments.
- Operate all related specialized instrumentation and technologies, i.e. QC equipment, expression High-throughput Quantitative RT-PCR, , liquid handling robots and other lab equipment.
- Maintain instrumentation per manufacture protocols.
- Work collaboratively with other staff and researchers.
- Receive and process CLIA or research samples in an efficient high-throughput manner (CLIA samples are only handled by validated employees and must adhere to all CLIA regulations).

2) Data Collection and Analysis - 20%
- Collect and analyze data using custom or vendor software.
- Evaluate and clearly communicate experimental results.
- Evaluate the standard metric set for quality control.
- Generate data reports with information that is useful to the clients' research
- Ability to accurately enter, interpret and analyze data.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

3) Project Management - 5%
- Create and track projects using UMGC FileMaker Pro.
- Coordinate processing activities with student workers.
- Conduct meetings with supervisor to discuss the administration and overall activity of the services.
- Facilitate the timely production and delivery of orders or results for clients.
- Track order statuses.
- Schedule time for shared equipment.
- Maintain inventory and consumables for related services.

4) Client Correspondence & Troubleshooting - 5%
- Assist clients with locating orders, samples, and data through various methods of communication, i.e. e-mail, telephone, video conferencing, or via face-to-face interaction.
- Communicate with clients and vendors to resolve conflicts and ensure delivery of requested products.
- Troubleshoot sample or result issues.
- Maintain instrumentation per manufacture protocols.

5) Follow Quality Control and Assurance Protocols - 10%
- Test samples for compliance with minimum quality control requirements using PicoGreen and Agilent Bioanalyzer.
- Create quality control reports using data.
- Maintain lab safety and CLIA requirements and guidelines.
- Complete CLIA/research required reports and records for each project.
- Assist with data mining and metadata for improving results of CLIA/research projects.

40-hour work week will be arranged ahead of time which may include nights and weekends.

Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. This position has been designated as Profile 1 and is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located in our on campus space in the Cancer & Cardiovascular Research Building. Genomics' management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.


Qualifications


Required (Minimum) Qualifications: Position requires BS/BA or equivalent combination of education and work experience equal to four (4) years. Demonstrated experience in research and diagnostic testing is required. Ability to follow oral directions and written protocols precisely, independently motivated, able to manage time and meet deadlines, strong communication skills, meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability of work.

Preferred Qualifications: (Selection Criteria) Extensive molecular biology laboratory experience in preparation of sample QC using Agilent Tapestatiion and Bioanalyzer and Database management using FileMaker Pro system.


About the Department


This position is located in the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) where we provide services to University and external researchers. The purpose of this position is to process genomic services at the UMGC for internal and external researchers. The workload consists of following standard operating procedures (SOP), processing research and CLIA samples. generating and delivering data for service manager review. In addition, this position also requires the running, maintaining, and troubleshooting of specialized scientific instrumentation necessary to accomplishing the tasks associated with services. Team members will be expected to work collaboratively, meet CLIA requirements for sample and reagent tracking/documentation, assist in making proprietary reagents, and other general laboratory duties as assigned by direct supervisor.
