Chief Operating Office (COO) is responsible for the world leading operations across every aspect of CommBank, from innovative product platforms for our customers to essential tools within our business. Within Chief Operating Office (COO) is the engine room of the CBA Group, driving the processes that deliver products and services to our customers. If you have taken out a home loan, opened a CommSec account, used an ATM, applied for a credit card, or made an international funds transfer, then you have interacted with one of the many aspects of COO.
COO is undertaking a substantial transformation agenda, driving simplification, standardisation and automation of end-to-end processes to create simple and intuitive customer experiences. COO is building digital capabilities and driving structural industry change to support future innovation.
Your Team
The Head of Risk Private Bank role involves the provision of all aspects of credit services including advisory, application decisioning within approval authorities and leadership of the Private Bank Credit Risk team.
The role will include credit monitoring and overview, interpretation of policy, operational risk, training, guidance for both the Credit Risk team and Commonwealth Private management and team members and overview of the Bank's compliance requirements.
The role will work closely with all business partners, internal and external with a strong reliance on collaboration and teamwork.
Effective use of all resources available within Private Banking and across COO will be utilised to achieve optimum team results.
The role will report directly to Executive Manager Proprietary and Private Bank Credit.

  • This role sits at the head of the Private Bank Credit Risk Team business and is responsible on a national basis for all team members including both direct reports and those reporting to them. The core responsibilities may include the following:
  • Overview and manage workflow for staff to ensure the broader team meets SLA targets and delivers on customer requirements in a timely manner. This includes oversight of effective prioritisation of work for the team.
  • Ensure the team completes quality and responsible lending credit risk decisions across both consumer and commercial credit exposures within the regulatory framework and in line with the Risk Appetite and Group Risk framework of the organisation whilst efficiently and effectively working to optimise credit decisioning processes and turnaround times.
  • Effective use of hindsight application reviews with data within the team focusing on improving individuals' application quality and performance
  • Decision both consumer and commercial credit applications, exercising sound commercial and consumer judgment while operating within the parameters of your personal delegation and the stated Risk Appetite. You will exercise a delegation of up to $30m for both consumer and commercial credit exposures.
  • Effective use of all resources available within Proprietary Credit and COO nationally to achieve optimum team results.
  • Drive and deliver continuous improvement within the team to simplify our business and to improve outcomes for our customers.
  • Working with change and system professionals to create and/or modify new and existing workflow management and reporting tools for use in monitoring and measuring the performance of the Private Bank Credit Risk Team
  • Support group sponsored projects for implementation and improvement, ensuring the team are engaged, motivated and capable.

  • Apply CBA's people management criteria to effectively manage such issues as occupational health and safety, recruiting, on boarding of new staff, creating development plans, quarterly reviews and PF&R's, providing feedback formally and informally to staff where required, carry out people discussions when necessary, manage unscheduled absences and annual leave as per People and Culture policy and any other aspects applicable within HR guidelines

Internal and External Client/Customer Service
  • You will be the principal representative of the Private Bank Credit team with senior management of business partners and will be involved as a member of or key contributor to the risk and business management forums and committees that govern the operation of the Private Banking business.
  • Work collaboratively with all key business partners in an open and transparent manner to deliver excellence in customer service. Regular and open communication is a key function and responsibility of this role.
  • A thorough understanding of the risk management framework, practices and policies will be critical and understanding how these apply to the operational team for support and ongoing management will be expected.

Contribution to Business/Profit
  • Ensure the team understands the contributions to the business and profit, ensuring quality and responsible credit risk decisions are made by officers in a consistent manner in line with the strategic direction of the organisation.
  • Ensure compliance within delegated authorities and internal and external compliance / audit requirements which may include adherence to government/governing body legislative policies.
  • Adherence to the guidelines established within your personal PCAA delegation.
  • Act within the Risk Management framework of CBA
  • Ensure policy, systems, tools and procedures are in line with RBS Risk Management expectations, thereby ensuring optimal execution of credit risk management strategies and adherence to credit competency guidelines.
  • Management of financial and business costs that you are directly involved with, adhering to guidelines and/or directions. This may include such items as corporate card expenses, cab charges, overtime payments, general expenses, reward and recognition allocated budget, gifts and entertainment register, contractor employment and payments.

We're interested in hearing from people who
  • At least 10 year's experience in a senior position dealing with risk, including exercising a meaningful delegation in a major financial institution
  • Experience in leading and managing a team
  • Proven track record in senior management and/or strategic roles
  • Thorough understanding of the concepts of counterparty risk across commercial and retail lending
  • Thorough understanding of the Regulatory environment as it relates to retail and commercial lending
  • Proven ability working across business boundaries to achieve results
  • Ability to think outside the box and adapt quickly to new
  • Ability to provide sound, consistent risk decisions.
  • Industry related tertiary qualifications
  • Relevant professional qualification or studying towards it (preferred but not essential)
  • Must be results driven, goal oriented with a flexible and adaptable approach
  • High level commercial acumen
  • High level of personal integrity and a strong commitment to the National Privacy Principles and the Bank's confidentiality policies
  • Flexibility and desire to work in a busy, commercial, competitive environment to meet objectives and targets
