Your new role

An exciting new opportunity has arisen to help lead the continuing updating of the technical standards (the DMRB and MCHW) that are used design, construct, maintain and operate main roads across the United Kingdom. The post holder will be engaged in managing the governance processes relating to the updating of standards and manage a number of Senior Advisors who undertake content reviews and assist technical authors develop updates to the DMRB and MCHW.

The post holder will manage a team of senior advisors and assist the development and implement policies, standards, operating procedures and best practices, and provide specialist advice and guidance regarding the development, management and digitalisation of standards as well as managing projects delivered by suppliers to help develop and deliver these changes.

This role will be based in one of our offices in Birmingham, Bedford, Bristol, Leeds, Guildford or Exeter. The post holder will be expected to travel to other offices and suppliers offices throughout England as required. Occasional travel to meet with the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may also be required.

What youll be leading on

  • Management of technical governance for the development and publication of updates to the DMRB and MCHW.
  • Plan and manage project activities and resources, including external expert and consultancy support as appropriate, identifying risks and appropriate mitigation and reporting progress, to ensure delivery of project objectives to time and cost.
  • Engage with stakeholders across National Highways and externally to understand their business needs, to identify key areas for improvement and to share best practice.
  • Communicate changes to the development and publication of the DMRB and MCHW (including the move to digital distribution of machine-readable clauses) to all stakeholders to support successful implementation.
  • Manage staff that keep to date

To be successful youll need

  • A broad experience of the governance processes associated with infrastructure management technical standards with the ability to provide information and specialist advice on such matters.
  • Proven experience of developing and delivering change ideally related to technical standards.
  • Evidence of managing internal and external stakeholder relationships including Team Management
  • Proven experience of developing solutions and providing specialist advice.
  • Ability to demonstrate efficiencies and demonstrate value for money across a programme of projects.

The Safety, Engineering and Standards teams key priorities are to support world class operational delivery and technical advice for our road network, provide support services to lead, enable and innovate in the development of the Strategic Road Network and provide expert advice on matters relating to health and safety.

The Technical Standards Group are responsible for the management of United Kingdom Technical Standards for roads. This post with report to the Head of Technical Standards and will manage a team of Senior Advisors and other staff.
