Description

The newly imagined Johns Hopkins Underserved in Medical Professions (JUMP) program is a premier 4yr+ enrichment program/learning community for all underserved and/or FLI students on a pre-med/pre-health pathway at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The JUMP program is aligned with and actively attuned to the definition of underserved in medicine and holistic review practices of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Working closely with the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, JUMP is centered on developing knowledge and essential skills for successfully navigating the pre-med/pre-health pathways at Hopkins and beyond. JUMP programming is anchored in five core pillars: Academic, Testing and Application Support, Mentoring, Immersive Experiences, Learning and Skill Development, Leadership and Community Engagement.


We are seeking a JUMP Fellow who willsupports the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Director of JUMP by providing part-time advising support for the program. The Fellows will demonstrate cross-cultural nuance in holistic advising for underserved and/or FLI students. As advocates for underserved and/or FLI students in their overall student experience and pursuit of their academic and professional goals, the JUMP Fellows will establish collaborations, within Johns Hopkins and the JUMP program, that promote student success and the overall mission of the program. More specifically, the JUMP Fellows will provide holistic advising that prioritizes underrepresented groups, first-generation, and/or low-income college students' knowledge of the pre-med pathway and specific skill-building.


The JUMP Fellows report to the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Director of JUMP in the Center for Student Success. The JUMP Program is running one search for two part-time JUMP Fellows to be hired and onboarded simultaneously. Both positions are available for remote and in-person work.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Advising (80%)

  • Develop programming and curriculum for mentorship and pre-health programs for JUMP members as needed.
  • Provides high-quality one-on-one advising and coaching to approximately 200 JUMP students on topics including but not limited to JUMP and Hopkins resources, application progression, personal statements, pre-health/pre-med resources, health profession exploration, research opportunities, MCAT or graduate program entrance exam readiness, stress-management, and wellness.
  • Provide targeted additional advice, to individuals and groups, for special JUMP populations on an as-needed basis.
  • Facilitate connections as needed between JUMP students and the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Offices of Academic Advising.
  • Provide holistic advising that prioritizes students' knowledge of the pre-med pathway and specific skill-building.
  • Collaborate with the School of Medicine, JUMP alumni, and other campus partners for mock interviews and provide students mock interview program.
  • Stay abreast of current and national trends of underserved, first-generation, and/or limited-income college students pursuing careers in the health professions.
  • Serve as liaison between program and external partners to support pre-health initiative programs.
  • Manage the One Day in Medicine and One Day in Nursing programs.
  • Facilitate other resource referrals as appropriate.


Tracking and Engagement: (10%)

  • Develop and assess the JUMP appointment tracking system.
  • Maintain detailed records and notes of advising and coaching appointments in the JUMP tracking system.
  • Collaborate concerning referrals with JUMP partners, including Academic Support Services, Life Design, Scholars and Fellows, the FLI Network, etc. to enhance academic and post-graduation planning for JUMP students.


Administrative and Program Support: (10%)

  • Support the Director and Associate and Assistant Director of JUMP to identify and recruit eligible JUMP participants each year.
  • Support the Director and Assistant Directors of JUMP in maintaining a system to track student participation in JUMP programming and FLI Initiatives.
  • Attend, support, and provide technical support to the JUMP-Start intake sessions (bi-weekly).
  • Create social media campaigns to align with JUMP messaging and programming as needed.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity with the academic rigors of pursuing a career in science, medicine, or related health professions is required.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Must be available and willing to work some evenings/weekends as required for events and programming.
  • Ability to use appropriate judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Ability to keep detailed notes and submit reports to JUMP Leadership in a timely manner.
  • Ability to influence societal and workplace attitudes that honor principles to create a more inclusive community.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills.
  • Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Johns Hopkins University graduate.
  • Must be in your Bridge Year(s) before starting Medical School or another Health Professional Program.
  • Knowledge of the pre-health track.
  • Demonstrated success working with and/or knowledge of the following student populations: underrepresented racial minorities (American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander), first-generation students, and/or students from limited-income backgrounds/families.
