Laboratory Assistant II - Float Springfield Clinic
The Laboratory Assistant 2 - Float is responsible for performing waived laboratory testing (i.e., rapid strep, flu, urine dips, etc.); interpreting, documenting, and reporting test results; performing EKG's and POC testing (i.e. PT/INR, glucometer, etc.) under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures. The Laboratory Assistant 2 - Float provides point of entry for all specimens coming into the laboratory. Collects, labels, processes, and distributes patient specimens for testing; is responsible for registration and test data entry; monitors supply levels in specimen processing area and collection units; performs additional clinical duties as required.
Job Relationships
Reports to the Laboratory Manager or Supervisor.
Principal Responsibilities
Collects blood specimens using age appropriate skills.
Identifies the patient, selects venipuncture equipment based on patient age, and labels specimens according to policy.
Communicates with the patient and family as appropriate for age and maintains patient safety.
Performs proper collection of specimens including patient preparation, technique, specimen requirements and transportation, and utilizes and demonstrates proper use of safety equipment available for specimen collection.
Labels, processes, and distributes patient specimens according to established procedures.
Verifies specimens received meet all requirements and ensures specimens are processed properly.
Prioritizes workload to handle STATS ensuring turn-around time expectations are met and delivers specimens to proper departments in a timely manner.
Performs waived laboratory tests according to standard operating policies and procedures.
Verifies self-collected specimens received meet specimen requirements and proper labeling guidelines when returned by the patient.
Performs PAS duties as needed.
Operates and maintains equipment, instruments, and tools according to standard operating policies accurately and efficiently to meet expected turn-around times.
Displays troubleshooting skills and problem resolution techniques for minor issues with instrumentation and equipment, demonstrates the ability to perform simultaneous task accurately and efficiently, and is flexible to daily workload expectations.
Complies with quality control procedures, with preventative maintenance procedures, and meets established deadlines and remains current on competency assessment.
Identifies situations which may adversely affect quality patient care and initiates problem resolution.
Monitors daily use of reagents and supplies to maintain established inventory levels to contribute to financial success through efficient use of time and supplies.
Participates in the training of new employees.
Maintains a positive attitude and professional behavior in association with patients and employees.
Complies with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
Adheres to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments as required per policy.
Provides excellent customer service and adheres to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.

Education/Experience
High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience in phlebotomy, medical assistant, or other related medial program is preferred.
After three (3) months of employment at the Clinic the employee should be fully capable of performing as a lab assistant.
