Description


Under general supervision, maintain mouse colonies including all aspects of breeding, timed breeding, preweaning, weaning, aging and sexing and retiring for mouse colonies. Observe, report, and treat clinical health deviations. Describe phenotypes and collect and submit samples for proper genotyping. Interpret genotyping results to select the proper mice for breeding and shipment. Support importation/rederivation and assist with reproductive requests, including identification and recording of various stages of reproduction (estrus selection, vaginal plug identification, and palpation of pups), chimera and founder identification, and superovulation injections. Perform basic husbandry skills including transport of clean and dirty supplies, room environmental checks, cage servicing, animal welfare observations, and colony health (sentinel program and routine health screens). Enter colony management data into several computerized formats; communicate colony updates to supervisor, MBP core lab supervisors, UCD investigators and off-site clients on routine basis. Assist with breeding and research project management. All of the aforementioned duties may be required at a BSL1 or BSL2 level.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires that the employee must not own any rodent pets in the home or own any pets that require the feeding of live rodents.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license to drive campus owned vehicles between campus locations.
  • Schedule is to include one or both weekend days as part of regular working schedule.
  • Work flexible hours, occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work with animals in a research setting.
  • Work in a high health status, limited access, rodent barrier facility.
  • This position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials (may include biohazards, chemical hazards, and radioactive material) are present, up to and including BSL2 level work.
  • No smoking, no eating, and no beverages in laboratory or vivarium areas.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • BS Degree in biological sciences (animal science, genetics, or similar field), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the management and breeding of traditional and transgenic rodents, including knowledge of various genetic modification techniques and common breeding strategies.
  • Experience performing basic procedures in laboratory rodents, including restraint, examination, oral and injectable administration of materials, and euthanasia.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skill to recognize and treat common health problems in laboratory rodents.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the skills to use computerized data bases for scheduling procedures and to coordinate and maintain breeding records for laboratory animals, both electronic and hard copy
  • Skill to coordinate activities between units and investigators, and to consult with investigators regarding their research projects.
  • Skills to communicate effectively in order to coordinate activities between units and investigators and to train staff and students on relevant procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

  • AALAS certification (LAT or higher).

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience working in, and management of, highly biosecure/pathogen free rodent barrier facilities.
  • Experience working in a research environment and an understanding of basic study design principles.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of rodent microsurgery with basic entry level experience.
