SUMMARY:

The Plastics Department Procedure Focused Certified Surgical Technologists are multi-skilled health professionals who work interdependently with other healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare to the patient. They are trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills with extensive experience in surgical preparation and assisting. The Surgical Tech will be required to come in before normal business hours and stay after normal business hours on a regular basis as needed when the Plastic Surgeon is in surgery outside of the clinic. The CSTs will also work in general clinic with the providers when there are not in procedures/surgeries in or outside clinic. The goal of the clinical staff is to optimize outcomes and improve the quality of life for patients through efficient, cost effective care.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Patient Satisfaction/Responding to Patients

a) Appropriately schedules time off/Limit unscheduled absences

b) Respond to telephone inquiries relating to department services

c) Return patient calls promptly

d) Provide clean and comfortable environment for patients

e) Perform all duties in a timely and efficient manner

f) Notify Patient of test results in a timely manner per clinic/department policy


  1. Prepare patients for examinations and procedures
  2. Ensure consents, supplies, equipment and charts are prepped and set up prior to procedures
  3. Greet and arrive the patient
  4. Follow patient verification protocol
  5. Provide high level of customer service
  6. Accurately obtain and record medical histories verify all allergies, medications, and vital signs per clinic and department protocol
  7. Order, collect and prepare laboratory specimens as needed
  8. Handle and care for patient clothing, other personal property including prosthetic devices, hearing aids, dentures, glasses and contact lenses from admission to discharge
  9. Explain treatment procedures
  10. Ensure proper consents have been signed prior to the procedure by both the patient and MD
  11. Observe procedural time outs per facility policy prior to a case
  12. Draw up injections as ordered by MD
  13. Explain and Perform Venus Freeze treatments on Plastics Patients as needed.


  1. Assist the physician during examinations and procedures as needed
  2. Become proficient and assist assigned Plastic Surgeon with all levels of Plastic Surgery cases requested M-F at Surgery Center of Pinehurst and Moore Regional Hospital
  3. Provide educational materials and aftercare instructions
  4. Supply proper equipment
  5. Applies universal precautions and maintain a sterile field as appropriate for procedures
  6. Prepare dressings
  7. Clean and dress wounds by order of physician
  8. Take photographs
  9. Remove staples or sutures
  10. Prepare and administer medications as directed
  11. Order x-rays and/or cultures
  12. Respond to prescription requests/refills
  13. Perform other clinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician
  14. Escort patient to the secretary, patient access service associate, or financial counselor
  15. Prepare pathology form, cup collection label, log and record per policy
  16. Recognize and respond to emergencies per policy


  1. Perform administrative duties as directed
  2. Document patient communications and treatments accurately and appropriately
  3. Answer telephones and respond to clinical voice mail messages per policy
  4. Obtain prior authorization for medications
  5. Manage KPI/IPF reports including duplicate medication and medical reconciliation
  6. Maintain task lists
  7. Complete charge tickets, labels, consents, dx codes
  8. Other duties as assigned


  1. Post-Operative Follow up

a) Carry and answer Plastics after-hours cell phone and discuss patient situations with Plastic Surgeon as needed

b) Calls post-operative patients

c) Responds to prescription requests/refills

d) Provides aftercare instructions


  1. Computers: Electronic Medical Records & Practice Management Tasks

a) Accurate Documentation of: All patient history, injections and patient education per clinic policy

b) Input charges, notes etc. into Touch works per policy

c) E-Fax and call prescriptions

d) Monitor & complete daily department clinical tasks per protocol


  1. Maintain rooms, equipment and supplies

a) Clean rooms and change linens per clinic policy

b) Empty exam rooms of instruments that need to be cleaned secure nurse's station cabinets nightly

c) Dispose of all biohazard material per clinic policy

d) Orders clinical supplies and drugs for the Plastics Clinic and Procedure Rooms.

e) Put away stock upon arrival

f) Perform inventory of products and prepare reports as requested.

g) Maintain inventory and stocking of products

h) Sterilize, clean, and pack equipment and instruments per established protocols

i) Maintain sterilization logs

j) Ensure maintenance of equipment is maintained

k) Review department stock medications and samples regularly for expiration date

l) Clean exam room and nurses station counters and chairs per clinic policy


  1. Safety: Ensure Patient & Staff Safety

a) Follow OSHA guidelines

b) Follow universal precautions when caring for patients; Use PPE as directed

c) Follow all PSC policies when caring for patients

d) Safely transport patients to and from procedure rooms as necessary; assist with ambulation and wheel chairs

e) Ask for assistance when needed for lifting or transfer patients

f) Maintains CEU's and other requirements to safely care for patients in PSC procedure rooms, and at SCOP and MRH if applicable at all times


  1. Proactively Assist in Fiscal Management of Clinic Resources

a) Assist with maintaining established par levels on regularly used supplies

b) Avoid the need to over-night items or pay increased shipping fees for rush orders

c) Notify manager or discuss with peers blocks of time when there are no appointments to maximize down time completing tasks that are difficult to due during a busy clinic


  1. Work Collaboratively to Promote Increase in Allergy Clinic Patient Volume

a) Assist MD's, department manager and marketing director with department promotions as needed

b) Look for ways to expand the clinic services and patients. Discuss with department manager as needed

Requirements:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology Program
  2. Current Surgical Technologist certification with no restrictions
  3. Current BLS Certification required; ACLS required if assisting in surgery outside of the clinic
  4. Knowledge of infection control, sterile technique and basic health and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting
  5. Ability to use and apply medical terminology appropriately
  6. Thorough knowledge of general clinical principles, methodology and measures for outcomes
  7. Administrative skills necessary to effectively perform clerical tasks
  8. Prior ENT and/or Plastics surgical experience; knowledge of instruments and equipment used in specialty
  9. Requires ability to stand for up to eight hours a day, bend, reach, squat, kneel, move, lift of patients and/or equipment up to 50 lbs.
