Job Summary

Under general directive supervision, makes chemical and other tests essential to the study of power plant equipment operation and power plant cycle performance and the maintenance of performance standards relative to water used in the station, fuels, lubricating oils, and metal corrosion. Makes reports and calculations, performs appropriate corrective measures within employee's control, and directs duties of employees of lower classifications when necessary.

Job Description

Under general directive supervision, makes chemical and other tests essential to the study of plant equipment operation and plant cycle performance and the maintenance of performance standards relative to water used in the station, fuels, lubricating oils, and metal corrosion. Makes reports and calculations, performs appropriate corrective measures within employee's control, and directs duties of employees of lower classifications when necessary. Performs any of the duties of Assistant Laboratory Technician and, in addition, performs such duties as:

Analyzing results of chemical tests and relating them to cycle chemistry, equipment, and environmental performance to maximize efficiency, minimize cost and ensure regulatory compliance.

Installing and starting up of new and special equipment used in the analysis and operation of station systems.

Performing periodic checks and evaluations on laboratory work of others, such as checking written or computer-generated reports and records of laboratory data.

Inspecting heat transfer equipment, such as condensers, cycle chemistry components, environmental systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation.

Evaluating cycle chemistry in order to determine condenser leaks

Repairing condenser and other heat exchanger leaks.

Performing necessary data sampling for NPDES permitting or other environmental regulations as directed.

Performing DMR data review and/or data entry as directed for environmental reporting

Investigating or troubleshooting problems with station systems to determine cause and corrective actions.

Developing sampling and analytical techniques and procedures for this and other job classifications.

Performing analyses utilizing advanced analytical techniques, procedures and equipment.

Inspecting coal sampling system and practices in accordance with station, departmental and regulatory procedures.

Developing, reviewing and updating station, departmental and regulatory procedures and manuals.

Maintaining internal and external contacts within the scope and duties of this classification.

Maintaining a high level of technical knowledge by self-study and successfully completing Company's training in related courses, as specified by station management.

Completing all training and testing requirements of the job, including continuing education requirements as determined by the Company.

Participating in specialized projects or assignments to ensure safety, environmental, and operating procedures and regulations are followed which are within the scope and duties of this job classification.

Instructing and training employees in this and other classifications.

Performing other similar or less skilled work.

Performing the cleaning of plant equipment as necessary

Satisfactorily completing the Laboratory Technician job checklist within the first six months from the employee's classification date.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have all the qualifications of the Assistant Laboratory Technician and, in addition:

Must have at least four (4) years of related experience.

Must have at least a college level associate degree in chemistry or the equivalent course work as determined by the Company.

Must know the basic chemical reactions involved between various chemicals, feedwater and boiler water for feedwater and boiler water treatment.

Must be able to make qualitative and quantitative tests on samples submitted with a degree of accuracy necessary to the requirements of this type of laboratory testing.

Must be able to utilize and perform analytical test procedures from publications, such as, American Waterworks Association, Federal Environmental Protection Agency, American Society of Testing Materials, and Wastewater Standard Methods.

Must be able to calibrate the test apparatus used in the laboratory and plant.

Must have the ability to make thorough, accurate chemical analysis, and present clear, concise reports.

Must be Able to develop or modify analytical techniques necessary for such things as analysis of wastewater, feedwater, and scale deposits which may be unique to our system.

Must have successfully completed the Assistant Laboratory Technician job checklist, as well as items in the Laboratory Technician job checklist as required by station management.

Must have a cooperative temperament in a team environment.

Must be able to receive and clearly transmit orders and instructions in such a way as to obtain cooperation and satisfactory work results from others.

Must be able to work in a variety of environments including hot, cold, damp, and/or confined spaces.

Must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the job classification through the medium of tests.

Must maintain a valid driver's license.

Must be safety conscious at all times, and have a working knowledge of first aid, safety and firefighting equipment provided on the work site.
