Chevron Products Company is accepting online applications for the position of Maintenance Trainee located in the El Segundo, California Refinery through May 13th at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time Zone).

These are entry level positions within the Reliability Focused Maintenance Department at the El Segundo Refinery.  Experience and certificates are welcome but not required.  Successful candidates may be assigned to one of the crafts listed below and will receive a comprehensive 3-year training program, which will include on-the-job work assignments and classroom training.  The work environment could include working in a maintenance shop or in a processing unit.  All crafts listed below work with other Maintenance Crafts, Reliability, Operations, and Engineering on a daily basis.   

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to: 

  • Machinist Trainee: Routinely work around high temperatures, high pressures, hazardous chemicals, loud noises and sometimes at heights of 150 feet or higher. Positions will require lifting, standing, kneeling, and sitting. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of:  pumps, compressors, blowers, turbines, fin fans and gearboxes.  Machine shop equipment operation, including:  Saw, lathe, mill, boring, and drill press. 
  • Metals Craft Trainee: The successful candidates will play a key role in a wide variety of metals maintenance tasks such as assemble, install, and maintain piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water heating, cooling, lubricating, and refinery process systems. Will also weld, using coated electrode process, 5 chrome, ½ moly, and chrome-nickel, and other inert gas processes. Build, erect, repair, test and maintain all types of boilers, tanks, and pressure vessels, and perform structural and plate work on dust, air, gas, steam, oil, water and other liquid-tight containers. 
  • Instrument/Electrician (I&E) Trainee: The successful candidates will play a key role in a wide variety of instrument/electrician maintenance tasks such as installation, preventive maintenance, calibration, testing, troubleshooting and repairing of process control and analytical equipment in a large industrial facility. Will work in an industrial environment with voltages up to 115kV. Job responsibilities include installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting and repairing high and low voltage/amperage electrical components, systems, and equipment including: locating problems, determining appropriate courses of action and coordinating repairs with the affected parties. I&E mechanics fabricate and install electrical systems and components and install wiring and electrical equipment, ensuring code compliance. They are responsible for industrial controls, instrumentation, power distribution, motors, and building maintenance. 
  • Instrument/Analyzer (I&A) Trainee:  The successful candidates will play a key role in a wide variety of instrument/analyzer maintenance tasks such as: perform troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis of complex online analytical systems used for process optimization and control and environmental regulation compliance, perform routine preventative maintenance on online analytical systems, and compare online analyzer results with laboratory generated results to monitor performance of online systems and resolve discrepancy issues.  I&A mechanics are responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of online analyzer systems and instrumentation.

 Required Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. 
  • A valid Driver's License. 
  • Must have a minimum 2 years of any type of work experience. Military experience is counted as work experience. 
  • Must be able to use computers to enter work histories and perform corporate compliance activities. 
  • The position will typically work a 4x10 dayshift work schedule. Typical shifts are Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday but can vary based on work needs. Occasional shift and weekend work will be required. 
  • Willing to work overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends.   
  • Willing to be on call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies. 
  • Willing to work outside in inclement weather with or without accommodation on a daily basis. 
  • Willing to work in compact and confined spaces with or without accommodation. 
  • Willing to climb ladders, walk up and down steps, and work at heights with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Associates/Technical Degree or vocational school certificates in Instrumentation, Analyzers, Engine Maintenance, Process Technology, Automotive Technology, EEREC (Electrical/Electrical Technology), Maintenance Engineer, Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Chemistry. 
  • Two or more years of welding, pipe fitting, boiler making, instrumentation, basic electrical, online analyzer, millwright, or machinist work experience. 
  • Previous work experience in an industrial plant environment. 
  • Previous work experience involving troubleshooting, problem identification and resolution. 
  • Previous work experience in a Maintenance or repair department. 
  • Ability to grasp complex issues and apply good problem-solving skills to develop recommendations/solutions. 
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and take initiative to address deficiencies and malfunctions of the equipment in their assigned area. 
  • Must have strong team and communications skills.
