The Opportunity

The Department of Biology at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure earning instructor or lecturer, anticipated to begin August 2024. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per academic semester in the undergraduate biology plant science track, based on the unit's current workload policy, and will curate the department's herbarium collection.

The UCF Herbarium was founded in 1968 for the deposit, curation, and study of preserved plant and fungi specimens. The growing collection includes over 20,000 specimens, some dating back to the 1920s ().

The Department of Biology is in the College of Sciences (COS) which houses most of the university's natural, computational, and social sciences in eight departments, two schools, and several centers. Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree (for instructor) or a Ph.D. (for lecturer) in Biology, Plant Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required by the start of employment. In addition, applicants must have at least two years of in-person teaching experience in a college environment and must have experience collecting, mounting, and classifying specimens of plants or fungi.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Can contribute to teaching upper-division courses such as Principles in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Plant Anatomy, Plant Physiology, or Plant Kingdom.

  • Have experience using active learning strategies in large-enrollment courses.

  • Have experience in academic outreach to the general public.

  • Have at least three years of experience as herbarium curator.

  • Have published work on plant anatomy, plant taxonomy or plant systematics.
