Description

Supervises daily school bus operations and provides both administrative and supervisory oversight for bus inspections, vehicle maintenance, bus drivers and transportation aides. Provides input for bus routing and scheduling. Ensures buses are safe, drivers are certified and trained and student transportation needs are met.

  • Assists with administration and monitoring of school bus inspections.
  • Ensures staff and contracted bus drivers are in compliance with state requirements.
  • Assists in the conduct of bus route audits and builds route descriptions
  • Provides support to the school bus safety supervisor on safety matters.
  • Manages dispatch operations and performs dispatch duties as needed.
  • Reviews all departmental invoices prior to processing.
  • Assists Manager of Bus Operations in the resolution of operational issues and concerns.
  • Makes field visits to routes, vendor locations, and transportation facilities as necessary.
  • Prepares required operational reports pertaining to the transport of regular program students.
  • Represents the Department of Pupil Transportation and accepts responsibility for other relevant tasks as required.
  • Recommends routing and scheduling changes and personnel actions.
  • Understands and applies related employee union contract provisions as appropriate.
  • Provides appropriate supervision, mentoring, and professional growth and development opportunities to assigned staff. Such responsibilities include hiring staff, conducting performance reviews, and implementing plans to support achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board's policies and the professional standards.

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, transportation, or a related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the education requirement.
  • Four years related business management or transportation experience.
  • Other equivalent combinations of education and related professional experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of routing and scheduling.
  • Valid Maryland Class C driver's license or equivalent.
  • Leadership skills necessary to create a productive and unified team approach to problem solving.
  • Knowledge of COMAR as it relates to transportation.
  • Knowledge of pupil transportation and other relevant legislation pertaining to the transportation of public school students.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skilled in the use of computer applications, including database management and Microsoft office.
