Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs technical and mechanical manual work involving repair and maintenance of vehicles, light/heavy equipment, emergency vehicles, maintenance equipment, and other automotive/mechanical machinery.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. (10%)
  • Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts to ensure proper operations; conducts road tests of vehicles undergoing repair. (10%)
  • Performs technical and general mechanical repair work on ambulances, vehicles, trucks, or other automotive/mechanical equipment. (10%)
  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses problems involving various systems/components of vehicles or equipment. (10%)
  • Examines vehicles/equipment to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; conducts diagnostic testing; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or prevent future problems; determines parts/supplies necessary to conduct repairs. (10%)
  • Performs appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components. (10%)
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment. (10%)
  • Performs general welding and fabrication work; rebuilds equipment and repairs body/frame damage, broken/cracked parts or fabricates new parts; repairs and fabricates frames; cuts metal and welds metal components; fills holes and removes minor dents; replaces truck fenders; repairs bent/damaged trailer ramps. (5%)
  • Transports, loads and unloads various equipment, parts, and materials used in projects. (10%)
  • Monitors inventory of division equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials; picks up/delivers materials as needed. (5%)
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. (5%)
  • Mentors junior mechanics and works more independently in the E0 & E1 related fields of ambulance specific inspection and testing duties. (5%)


Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.


Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years' experience as a Fleet Technician or equivalent mechanic experience required.


Licenses/Certifications:

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications E0 & E1 required.
  • DLR-Colorado Driver's License Class R - DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of motor vehicles engine, parts, and systems, including their design, users, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles including cars and trucks.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, installation, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of internal combustion engine ignition, carburetion, fuel and electrical systems sufficient to be able to perform maintenance, repair and major overhaul of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems sufficient to be able to perform diagnosis, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of heating, cooling, air conditioning, and exhaust systems sufficient to be able to perform diagnosis, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others.
  • Skill in using tools, equipment, and mechanic shop equipment common to light and heavy equipment diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
  • Skill in tuning a variety of models and types of engines
