Job DescriptionDescription:

Star Seed is a nationwide wholesale supplier of both agronomic and conservation seed based out of Osborne, KS. In business for over 100 years, Star Seed has developed over time to meet our customers ever changing needs. With state of the art equipment, quality staff and a family minded work environment, we have focused our efforts to service our footprint with speedy service and quality products.


Direct farm management of native grass and wildflower production acres located in North Central Kansas.

  • Crop Establishment and Production: Responsible for seed production field establishment and management. This includes land leases, soil preparation, soil testing, seeding, pest (weeds, insects, rusts, molds) monitoring and control, irrigation, and prescribed fire.
  • Seed Harvesting: Responsible for harvesting and handling of seed from field to facility.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining records for all aspects of crop production including costs, yields, planting data, harvesting data.

Responsible for operations and maintenance of equipment that includes but is not limited to pickups, tractors, combines, stripper headers, seeding equipment, sprayers, augers, mowers, tillers, semi tractors and trailers.


Responsible for managing and leading crews to complete in-field quality control operations of both agronomic and conservation-based seed crops.


Oversee native grass growing contracts and agreements with producers and advise on best management practices in the production of their crops for seed. Species selection, installation, fertility and herbicide recommendations, harvest timing and methods, and seed handling.


Coordinate with purchasing and sales staff to contract and procure seed from in field producers for a variety of agronomic seed crops including but not limited to oats, rye, millet, triticale, peas, and forages.


Build and utilize knowledge base for chemical and fertilizer usage for a variety of different crop types.


Assist with processing rough products into clean and marketable inventory. This would include loading, hauling, cleaning, processing, bagging, handling, and mixing seeds.


Coordinate logistics with transportation and warehouse managers for movement of rough product from field to facility as well as clean seed from facility to producers.


Participate in programs that enhance and increase expertise relative to the operation of Star Seed as well as marketing the products of Star Seed such as meetings, workshops, field days, farm shows, and tours.


Communicate with other managers to coordinate efforts to reach common goals.

Requirements:

4 year degree or equivalent experience required.

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time and do labor intensive work
  • Ability to operate and maneuver machinery such as tractors, trailers, loaders, trucks and pickups
  • Ideally proficient in mechanical work inside and outside of the shop
  • Ability to manage time wisely
  • Ability to communicate and manage a team
