Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

As a member of the Support Operations Service team, the SOS Tech - Orthopedics (Non-Certified) is responsible for supporting the hospital's goals of safety, patient throughput, patient satisfaction, and financial accountability.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties in assigned Task Categories: Orthopedic Technician, Logistics Services [Transport], Specialty Logistics Services [Stocking/Stock Room Attendant], and Distribution Services [Equipment Depot]. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. This position may receive assignments from a computer dispatch system.

All Task Categories must adhere to the following:

  • Maintains hospital standards of participating in mandatory in-services and other mandatory hospital/departmental requirements.
  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, and safety.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings and complete all educational programs and in-services as required.
  • Follow all infection prevention practices (i.e., proper cleaning process, hand hygiene, standard & isolation precautions where and if required and proper use of personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Recognizes and adheres to patient privacy requirements (HIPAA).

Task Category: Orthopedic Technician:

  • Assist physician and nursing staff with the proper delivery of orthopedic care, under the direction of both the orthopedic physicians and nursing staff and is supervised by a Registered Nurse.
  • Understands all aspects of application, removal and adjustment of casts, braces, splints, traction and improvised setups.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient and/or family based on history, signs and symptoms and/or changes in the patient's condition and informs/advises the nurse and/or physician.
  • Fits and adjusts canes, crutches and walkers and gives patient instruction in the use of these walking aides.
  • Fits simple braces and prosthetics and performs minor adjustments and repairs.
  • Applies all types of prefabricated soft goods i.e. slings, collars, and immobilizers.
  • Maintains supplies and stock as needed.
  • Assists orthopedic surgeon in ER procedures, as in reduction of fractures and dislocations, minor surgery and pin removals and cast wedging.
  • Enters daily departmental charges into charge system.
  • Utilizes equipment needed for application, adjustment and repair of casts and braces, alignment jigs, hinge apparatus.
  • Reads x-ray films.
  • Applies and removes all types of extremity casts and variations ie., short and long arm casts, short and long leg casts, cylinder casts, hinge knee and elbow casts using plaster, synthetic materials and thermoplastics as appropriate.
  • Fabricates splints for various conditions under direction of the orthopedic surgeon.
  • Assists physician in application of special casts ie., club foot casts, body casts, spicas, etc.
  • Provides maintenance of casts and determines needs for repair and reinforcement.
  • Adjusts and repairs casts and braces.
  • Instructs the patient in cast care to include danger signs.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in traction, principles and application techniques and prepares or sets up specific types of traction that is requested by the physician.
  • Assesses patients in traction, detects deficiencies in the apparatus and makes adjustments as necessary. Educates nursing staff on the specialized care needs of the patient in traction.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical and surgical asepsis and prepares for surgical procedures.
  • Sets up and maintains a sterile field for minor orthopedic procedures such as intra-articular injections, aspirations, and subcutaneous hardware removal.
  • Assists in minor surgical procedures including wound retraction, wound closure and intra-operative manipulation. Sets up specialized equipment such as fracture tables and risers.

    AND

    Task Category: Logistics Services [Transport]:

    • Direct contact with patients transporting them to and from various areas at the Sparrow Main Campus in a safe, friendly, and efficient manner on equipment designed for patient transportation.
    • May attach/remove telemetry from patients with training.
    • Attach patients to portable oxygen equipment.
    • Neatly and accurately record all daily activities.
    • Ability to operate multiple different types of motorized beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and electric cart mover.
    • Assist in unloading delivery trucks and materials being delivered via hospital vehicles.
    • Transport linen, blood, specimens, medical records, equipment, paperwork, and other materials throughout the facility.
    • Clean, perform safety inspections, and minor repairs on wheelchairs and stretchers as designated. Follow routine maintenance checks (i.e. fluid levels) on vehicles, per mechanic's schedule.
    • Advise supervisor of any vehicle repairs.
    • Clean vehicles inside and out routinely.
    • Operate hospital vehicles in order to obtain, transport, and deliver a variety of materials such as mail, food service items, laboratory specimens, and other supplies.

    Task Category: Specialty Logistics Services [Stocking/Stock Room Attendant]:

    • Receive stock and place on shelves or in the appropriate locations.
    • Unbox items, breakdown cardboard, take cardboard to recycling container.
    • Prepare janitor carts for incoming shifts.
    • Clean stockroom areas.
    • Check carts in and out for each caregiver.
    • Inventory items and order as needed.

    AND

    Task Category: Distribution Services [Equipment Depot]:

    • Track, clean/disinfect, distribute, and ensure maintenance for all minor moveable medical equipment and carts for the Sparrow Health System.
    • Request, track, and ensure the expeditious return of all rental equipment used by the Sparrow Health System, within the parameters of this department.
    • Maintain an electronic ledger of all request and returns for all equipment (rental, owned, borrowed, or leased).
    • Work with the Biomedical Engineering/Clinical Engineering team to ensure all equipment is properly maintained as scheduled.
    • Utilize all online rental software, RFID software and hardware, and operate as the subject matter expert for equipment tracking.
    • Participate in all cost saving projects related to equipment and cart maintenance.
