What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated and highly motivated individual to join our Facilities Management team as a Facilities Mechanical Engineer (Job Title: Mechanical Engineer). Our fast paced, National Laboratory setting necessitates that the candidate be comfortable with ambiguity and variability of assignment and accept the value of being in a service group. We seek a well-rounded individual, adept at problem solving in a variety of settings.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform mechanical building and site infrastructure system designs, or oversee design by others, and integrate these to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations
  • Lead or be a part of a multi-disciplined group in the design and develop design & construction document packages to meet customer requirements, relevant building codes, environmental regulations, safety regulations, and corporate standards
  • Perform engineering analysis, calculations, and develop construction drawings and specifications sufficient to define systems for modification or new construction
  • Oversee design and construction efforts, through in-house and external resources, to meet established scope, schedule, and cost outcomes
  • Manage and interface with external, contracted resources for the completion of construction work in compliance with Federal procurement processes
  • Develop and/or contribute to development of project plans, schedules, and estimates
  • Inspect construction progress in accordance with design requirements, codes, customer needs, and site standards
  • Review plans for constructability and completeness as well as improve cost effectiveness and customer satisfaction
  • Summarize completed construction and planning efforts through project close out processes to maintain site standards and documentation
  • Review, troubleshoot, and understand building and infrastructure mechanical systems to ensure they will meet customer needs and expectations and remain in compliance with relevant Building and Safety Codes

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Ability to obtain Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in the State of California within 2 years of hire
  • PMP certification from the Project Management Institute
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer license (PE) in the State of California
  • Experience performing mechanical design for various building systems, HVAC, plumbing, or other specialized mechanical design relevant to modification/sustainment of existing facilities
  • Knowledge of California Building Codes and California environmental regulations
  • Ability to manage projects from concept through design and construction
  • Experience utilizing AutoCad or similar drafting software

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
