The Nutrition Technician provides medical nutrition therapy to patients classified as being at low nutrition risk: may include patient interviews, medical record review formulating nutrition care plans, nutrition counseling and medical record documentation in compliance with department and facility standards. Completes menu processing responsibilities related to patient meal tray delivery and order transcription.

Responsibilities

• Assessment form: Completes the assessment form including the accurate calculation of energy and protein needs. The assessment of energy and protein needs are completed at 85%-90% accuracy. Patients are referred to the clinical nutritionist per department guidelines.
• Calorie counts: Completes calorie counts to include posting of the intake record, notifying nursing staff of the initiation of a calorie count, accurate calculation of the food items consumed using ADA exchange lists per department policy, medical record documentation, and patient dietary restrictions.
• Communication: Communicates with dietitians regarding consults referrals and other patient issues relevant issues either verbally or in writing daily and in a professional manner.
• Customer Service: Practices good customer relations: displaying a caring, courteous and respectful attitude to all patients and customers and a spirit of teamwork with hospital personnel. Follows department policy regarding customer relations.
• Kardex documentation: Kardex documentation is completed in a timely manner and coincides with all tasks completed as part of the patient's nutrition care. Kardex documentation is completed daily and accurately 95% of the time. Independently documents appropriate FDI information and activity in the Kardex and SMS. Documentation is completed daily with 95% accuracy.
• Medical Record Documentation: Medical record progress notes are based on identified problems and are consistent with the department format. Progress notes are completed daily with 95% accuracy. ITP is completed per department guideline with 99% compliance.
• Patient education: Performs nutrition education using accepted techniques and educational material for the following diets: RCCSF, Cardiac Surgery, Weight Reduction, DM Simple/Meal Plan, Bland, Low Residue and Group Classes
• Patient interviews: Interviews patients using appropriate interpersonal and interview skills to complete the nutrition assessment. Uses appropriate language when interviewing and expresses him/herself in a professional manner.
• Reviews medical record: Reviews medical record for data collection to complete the nutrition assessment.
• Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
• Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

• High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
• Knowledge of basic principles of nutrition and modified diets.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

• Bachelor's or Associate's degree in foods and nutrition
• Bilingual, especially Spanish language
• One or more years of similar hospital or acute care experience.
