Leidos' Health Solutions Performance and Readiness Division is currently seeking a Research Physiologist to work within the Applied translational, exercise and metabolic (ATEAM) physiology group at the Naval Health Research Center's Warfighter Performance Department in San Diego, CA. The Research Physiologist will conduct research studies with a focus on military operational performance.

The Research Physiologist will develop scientific theories, design research methods and protocols, conduct human subjects research to evaluate warfighter performance in unique operational environments, and produce deliverables such as scientific reports, manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations to disseminate research findings to project sponsors and military communities.

Primary tasks will include:

  • Conduct research in laboratory and field settings related to the following scientific disciplines: exercise and metabolic physiology (to also include heat, cold, altitude), exercise performance, cognitive performance, body composition assessment, musculoskeletal injuries, nutrition, and simulated medical training.

  • Work independently to execute research objectives and serve as project lead for research studies in support of the government customer.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and internal/external stakeholders to achieve research objectives and provide project updates to all stakeholders.

  • Use technical knowledge and expertise to provide solutions to technical problems related to research projects and effectively communicate solutions and pertinent information to project team members, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

  • Use best practice approaches to develop projects, conduct research, ensure safety of human subjects during testing, collect data, analyze data, and create authored works such as peer-reviewed manuscripts, scientific reports, presentations, abstracts, and posters.

  • Conduct data collection on human subjects in laboratory and field settings using best practices for physiological and laboratory equipment.

  • In support of research projects, provide study briefs, perform subject screening to ensure study eligibility, conduct subject recruitment and enrollment, answer scientific and research-related questions pertaining to the informed consent discussion.

  • Communicate with colleagues and professionals in multiple physiological and medical disciplines to determine project design, changes in methodology, and discuss project outcomes.

  • Train research staff on best-practice research procedures, laboratory equipment use, and safety procedures.

  • Lead and mentor junior staff within the Warfighter Performance Department.

  • Manage institutional review board protocols to include modifications and continuing reviews.

  • Manage inventory for government customer.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in physiology or related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in human subjects research related to physiology.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Proven capability to understand and follow a research study protocol, obtain training and seek assistance when needed, and accurately perform or assess required protocol procedures.

  • Experience using methodologies and procedures to determine levels of physical and cognitive performance, fatigue, fitness, metabolic work rate, body composition, and nutrition in evaluating military operational performance.

  • A working knowledge of the following: human physiological responses to physical training and extreme environments (e.g., heat, cold, altitude), basic and advanced principles of exercise physiology, nutrition, body composition assessment techniques, medical simulation, research design, and statistical analysis techniques.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; experience interacting effectively with diverse groups.

  • Able to pass a background investigation and obtain a Secret security clearance

  • Able to work independently and take initiative.

  • Able to work onsite at Naval Health Research Center in San Diego will be required.

  • Able to work overnights and on weekends as needed for research data collection efforts and required meetings.

  • Able to travel to local area military treatment facilities and operational commands routinely.

  • Able to travel to approved alternate work site locations for field data collection outside of the San Diego area.

  • US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in physiology or related field.

  • Previous experience working as a research scientist or assistant in a military human subjects research program.

  • Previous experience collecting human subjects research data in a military training or operational setting.

  • Previous experience collecting human subjects research data in austere environments (such as at altitude, extreme hot/cold, overnight, shipboard, etc).

  • Active security clearance.

Pay Range:Pay Range $65,000.00 - $117,500.00
