Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is seeking full-time Youth Summer Camp Instructors to support our 2023 Diverse Young Leaders (DYL) Summer Camp program. DYL supports immigrant origin and BIPOC youth by promoting summertime learning, facilitating social-emotional development, and offering exciting enrichment and field trip opportunities during the summer.

Our program serves rising 1st-7th graders and divides students into three distinct cohorts, with rising 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, and 5th-7th graders. Each DYL cohort has its own classroom and lead instructor who is a full-time CMAA Youth Department team member. Youth Summer Camp Instructors serve as co-instructors in our classrooms. They are responsible for providing daily lessons in core school subjects (English, Social Studies, Math, and Science), facilitating extracurricular activities (arts and crafts, team-building games, etc.), and supervising youth during other pre-scheduled activities. Youth Summer Camp Instructors create a fun and safe space for learning, social-emotional growth, and youth development. The Youth Summer Camp Instructor position is a full-time (40 Hours/Week) paid position ending on August 4th, including a week of paid prep time for onboarding and training activities.

The ideal candidate will be outgoing, focused, and committed to serving young people. They will be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage and understand the needs of a diverse classroom of children. This position is an excellent opportunity to learn about and engage in the community, and to contribute to a high-energy team dedicated to supporting Uptown's immigrant origin, refugee, and BIPOC youth.

Rate: $20/Hour


Essential Functions:

  1. Design and implement daily lesson plans for core school subjects (English, Social Studies, Math, and Science) in collaboration with the lead instructor, aligned with the DYL Summer Camp program goals and objectives.
  2. Facilitate extracurricular activities (arts and crafts, team-building games, etc.) that promote students' social-emotional development and enrichment opportunities.
  3. Collaborate with the lead instructor to assess student progress, adapt teaching methods, and develop effective strategies to support student learning.
  4. Supervise students during pre-scheduled activities such as lunch, recess, and field trips, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  5. Develop and maintain a positive and respectful classroom culture that promotes learning, social-emotional growth, and youth development.
  6. Build positive relationships with parents and guardians, and communicate regularly with them about their child's progress, development, and behavior.
  7. Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
  8. Collaborate with other Youth Summer Camp Instructors and lead instructors to create a cohesive and dynamic program that meets the needs of all students.
  9. Maintain accurate records of attendance and other administrative tasks as required.
  10. Adhere to all CMAA policies and procedures, including safety and security protocols.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned by the Youth Department Manager.
Requirements:
  1. Some college education or Bachelor's degree is preferred, ideally in education, social work, psychology, or youth development field.
  2. Prior experience working with children, preferably in a classroom or camp setting, or previous experience with youth, specifically children ages 7-13.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with a team of diverse individuals.
  5. Understanding of and commitment to serving immigrant origin, refugee, and BIPOC youth.
  6. Strong classroom management skills and ability to create a positive learning environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  8. Friendly, patient, helpful, and energetic demeanor.
  9. Knowledge of Vietnamese, Chinese, or any second language is a plus.
