The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.

This job is for a position in the A1B Steam Plant Engineering and Design department.

The engineer will be part of a team under guidance of a lead electrical engineer responsible for design, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electro-mechanical actuators. Specific components that would be under the candidate's area of responsibility as a team member include various electro-mechanical components associated with valve actuators. Responsibilities include: design, qualify, reviewing supplier deliverables, aid in procurement, and provide documents that are technically correct, meet all specification requirements, support cost reduction objectives, are of the highest quality, and support downstream customer's needs. Engineer will assist with testing of electrical components. Knowledge and understanding of electrical schematics/circuit design is desired but not required.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will have the following:

• Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills
• Electrical Engineering degree with emphasis on electrical power distribution , motors, and power filtration circuits
• Experience/knowledge with circuit modeling software such as Simulink
• Rectifiers, EMI filters, Surge suppression circuits
• Testing and lab setup using various signal generators, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc
• Building simple switching circuits and Resistance, Inductor, Capacitor (RLC) circuits for testing components
• Knowledge of power electronics: MOSFETs, MOVs. IGBTs, TRIACs and ceramic resistors/capacitors
• Experience with 3 phase motors and controls
• Experience with common mode noise filtering methods
