Description

We are seeking aSr. Laboratory Manager who possess a minimum of 20 years plus of involvement in ophthalmology research and be passionate about driving impactful research in the field of eye health. The position is available in a vibrant and fast-paced ophthalmology research laboratory, which is actively seeking a highly skilled and organized individual to join our team in the role of Senior Laboratory Manager. As part of the team, the candidate will take on a diverse range of responsibilities. This includes overseeing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, managing a team consisting of postdocs, technicians, and students, and ensuring smooth coordination for the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies, including managing a large animal colony of different strains and disease models. The candidate will be entrusted with managing a substantial laboratory budget exceeding $1 million annually, sourced from Federal, Foundation, and Industry channels. Expertise will be crucial in reconciling funds monthly and assisting the Principal Investigator in maintaining project budgets and anticipating future funding requirements. Acting as a liaison between the lab and industry partners, the candidate will play a vital role in grant preparation and submission. Additionally, the candidate will be actively involved in conducting laboratory experiments using specialized techniques in molecular and cell biology in vision research. The role will extend to presenting research findings at both eye and non-eye research conferences, contributing significantly to manuscript preparation, including writing and figure creation, and overseeing submissions to peer-reviewed journals, with the expectation that the candidate has a publication h-index greater than 8. The candidate should possess demonstrated expertise in managing laboratory operations, personnel, and budgets, coupled with strong organizational and communication skills, manuscript publications and hold US and international patents. Proven ability to collaborate effectively with industry partners and university research administration is essential. Moreover, experience in conducting research in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and overseeing a drug development program is indispensable.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibilities of the lab manager will encompass managing and coordinating all laboratory functions. This will involve overseeing laboratory quality assurance and safety protocols being followed by lab personnel, executing experimental protocols by junior members of the laboratory, developing, determining, and maintaining standard operating procedures, and ensuring adherence to experimental procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining service contracts for major equipment, managing laboratory sample lists and inventories, and the role will extend to ordering lab supplies, tracking laboratory expenditures on grants, and maintaining purchase-related records.
  • Manage lab personnel records for regulatory training courses, visa requirements of laboratory personnel, conduct budget analysis, and handle bookkeeping duties.
  • Collaboration plays a crucial part in this role, and the lab manager will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in fostering collaborative efforts with academia and industry. This includes supporting the initiation of new projects, ensuring timely completion of ongoing projects, and maintaining communication with collaborative scientists.
  • Will play a key role in grant, patent filing and manuscript publication preparation, administering projects funded by entities such as the National Institutes of Health, private foundations, and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Act as a liaison between the PI, the department, and the university's research administration office, ensuring smooth coordination and efficient operation within the research environment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Chemistry.
  • Twenty plus years of comprehensive experience within a vision research laboratory setting.
  • Ten plus years specifically in a laboratory manager role is indispensable.
  • Proficiency in multitasking is crucial, alongside a demonstrated track record of facilitating collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience in supporting patent filings, preparing and submitting manuscripts, as well as securing grants, as evidenced by the candidate's previous achievements, is essential for success in this role.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Adeptness in sound research techniques.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the instruments and equipment typical in a vision research laboratory.
  • Proven track record of thriving in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Prior involvement in a drug discovery environment with a focus on AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) is obligatory.
  • Experience supporting the PI with tasks such as grant submissions, publications, and patent filing.
  • Proficiency in maintaining a large animal colony, particularly encompassing several eye disease models, is highly valued.

Starting Salary Range: $64,000 - $112,200 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
