Position description

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist in the Bowles Lab, in the area of Agroecology.

We seek an Assistant Project Scientist to conduct interdisciplinary Agroecology research on both the environmental outcomes of California's Farm to School Incubator Grant Program (CA F2S evaluation), and dry farm winegrowing on California's coast. The Farm to School evaluation is embedded in a large interdisciplinary team conducting a comprehensive and multidimensional evaluation of CA F2S.

This position focuses on on-farm biophysical grant outcomes, with a goal of assessing environmental impacts of the grant and Farm to School involvement. The successful candidate will work closely with the broader team that includes scholars in agroecology, agricultural economics, values-based supply chains, sociology, school food, and policy. The dry farm vineyard work explores the management practices that underpin successful dry farming, and their implications for winegrowers. The successful candidate will develop a participatory research project in collaboration with the California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance (CSWA) to design and implement on-farm field research in dry farm vineyards across the state. The Project Scientist will join the interdisciplinary Berkeley Agroecology Lab, a community with a strong emphasis on fostering an inclusive environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can thrive.

Responsibilities include:
* Conduct interviews with farm to school producer grantees throughout the state
* Conduct environmental impact assessments based on collected farm to school data, with a particular focus on climate related outcomes (e.g. estimated/modeled changes in greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon, input reduction, etc.)
* Design participatory field research with dry farm wine grape growers
* Organize on-farm field research and sample collection, as well as subsequent lab analyses
* Apply agroecological transitions framework to interpret results of environmental and socio-economic research
* Lead preparation of relevant reports for the CA Farm to School evaluation and California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance
* Work with Farm to School and California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance policy teams to develop briefs for policymakers
* Mentor undergraduate and graduate students as appropriate
* Present results at state and national conferences
* Publish papers in widely-read journals, contributing to the academic literature on sustainable farming transitions
* Participate in regular meetings with members of both interdisciplinary research teams

* Experience working as part of multidisciplinary teams including, but not limited to the disciplines of agroecology, policy, agricultural and environmental economics, public health and others.
