Position Purpose:
The Health & Safety Specialist/Coordinator supports the management of the facility's health and safety standards and procedures and compliance to federal, state, and local regulations. The Health & Safety Coordinator will help drive a proactive safety culture and assist with the continuous improvement of the facility's safety and health program.

Primary Duties/responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and implementation of the site's health and safety written procedures and programs.
  • Compliance to the regulatory requirements of OSHA, DOT, and EPA.
  • Conducting incident investigations, tracking incident data, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Implementation of the site emergency action plan and emergency response.
  • Conducting facility safety inspections and monitoring of daily work activities to ensure work is performed safely.
  • Developing and conducting safety and health training, including HAZWOPER training.
  • Reporting corporate and site safety metrics.
  • Conducting basic industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Facilitating monthly safety committee team meetings.
  • Management of Workers' Compensation program.
  • Implementing the behavior based safety program.
  • Maintaining OSHA logs in accordance with regulations.
  • Ensuring the implementation of the contractor safety program.
  • Performing job safety analyses and assigning PPE for various tasks.
  • Manages the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database.
  • Working with supervisors, managers, office staff and operations personnel to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Collaborating with EHS counterparts at other Veolia facilities.
  • Responding to day-to-day health and safety related issues.
  • Traveling may be required to perform periodic Veolia internal EHS and 3rd party customer audits, complete training and certification programs, and attend corporate EHS conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Typical daily activities include 50% in the field with operations and 50% office environment.
  • Must be able work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able work around hazardous materials such as sulfuric acid and molten sulfur.
  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator and/or fall protection equipment.
  • Required to wear safety equipment and FR clothing where appropriate.
  • Requires frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching and carrying, use of hand tools (shovels, brooms, sledgehammers, picks) and moving heavy objects.
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Typical Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week and will be required by site to assist with emergency call outs.
  • Occasional travel to the sister plant and Headquarters office may be required.
Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental, Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline is preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience working in the hazardous waste industry is preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Experience writing reports and policies for the health and safety field.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A strong knowledge of OSHA regulations is important. DOT and EPA regulatory knowledge is helpful, but not necessary.
  • The job could require walking and standing for long periods of time, climbing fixed ladders, ascending stairs and working outdoors in hot and cold weather.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google equivalents.
