Lead Underwriter - Environmental - Site Pollution (PLL) Pollution Legal Liability

Hybrid New York, Chicago, Alpharetta, and Los Angeles

This newly created position of Lead Underwriter - Environmental will require the individual to develop, underwrite and manage a book of complex site pollution business on a national level. Overall, the role is responsible for effectively managing day to day workload assignments while contributing to longer term strategic initiatives, building, and managing a team of PLL underwriters.

Candidate Profile

The Lead Underwriter for Pollution Legal Liability is a skilled professional who has proven their expertise in a leading Commercial Insurance Carrier. They have a successful history with complex redevelopment, M&A, and Heavy Industrial Pollution Legal Liability risks. Their focus is on owners, lessors, and real estate and financing firms, working across various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, education, general commercial real estate, warehousing and storage, energy, pharmaceuticals, mining, transportation, and sports.

In addition to technical expertise, the Lead Underwriter should possess strong networking skills and have or quickly establish relationships within the retail distribution channels. As a greenfield business leader they should also demonstrate hand on proficiency and willingness across all aspects of the underwriting process, portfolio management, solicitation of submissions, underwriting analysis, and the preparation and issuance of indications, quotations, and binders.

Furthermore, the candidate should have a strong executive presence; skilled in communication and influencing. They should be able to build strong relationships that benefit AXIS and contribute to long-term strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities:

• Develop new environmental business and grow the business profitably.

• Emerger as an industry thought leader.

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline environmental risks to ensure profitability.

• Develop, market and underwrite a portfolio of Site Pollution (PLL) Pollution Legal Liability

• Develop strong internal relationship with other Axis environmental business including contractor's pollution liability, package environmental (general liability, contractors pollution liability and professional liability) and environmental excess business.

• Develop and manage retail broker and intermediary relationships along with sales and marketing.

• Perform regular broker visits on timely and frequent basis via remote capabilities and in person when possible.

• Develop internal relationships with other profit centers and distribution staff.

• Work to become proficient in other related insurance products offered by AXIS.

• Assist junior staff with underwriting referrals and training within PLL space.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

• 15+ years of Environmental Liability insurance experience is desired along with a deep knowledge of environmental brokers, environmental coverages, and related ancillary coverages.

• Strong knowledge of underwriting pollution legal liability and contractors pollution liability.

• Proven marketing abilities and established relationships with retail environmental brokers.

• Bachelor's degree (or higher)

• Strong record of underwriting profitable business.

• Strong analytical and quantitative skills for risk and insurance metrics.

• Excellent communications skills and the ability to work across multiple areas of the company and industries.

• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and remotely as needed.

• Candidate should be positive, energetic and possess strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; be well organized, a team player and have strong negotiating skills.

• Moderate travel as required for meetings and marketing when possible, in the future.

For this position, we expect to offer a base salary in the range of USD $250K - $300K. The specific salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors, including the experience of the successful candidate and their work location.
