Job Overview

Progress Lighting is an industry-leader in residential lighting and ceiling fan products with a focus on whole-home solutions. Key market segments include home builders, lighting showrooms, retail home centers, ecommerce, and lighting specifiers.

The Product Manager (PM) is responsible for the product roadmap strategy and the overall growth plan of the category. The PM is responsible for identifying market trends and creating scope plans for Fan/Ventilation products including financial projections. The PM conducts market research including Voice of Customer to identify product needs/opportunities. The PM is responsible for all new product launch milestones such as: project timeline(s), forecasting, promotional materials, and training.

This is a high visibility position that will interface with all levels within the organization including Executive Management, Product Management, Product Development, Sales, Channel Marketing, Engineering, Customer Service and Operations. The position will interface directly with suppliers. The individual must be analytical, organized, tactically oriented and possess excellent communication and leadership skills.

A Day In The Life
  • Develop and execute product category strategy in alignment with brand strategy.
  • Identify, research, and define new product needs, innovation, and trends.
  • Create competitive analysis.
  • Manage the stage gate process: develop the project scope and specification, development of timelines, capital (tooling) budget, sales and margin calculations and inventory requirements.
  • Create product, product packaging and marketing specifications.
  • Interact closely with design, engineering and overseas project teams to champion and manage new product development projects.
  • Interact closely with external supplier partners.
  • Initiate product cost-out opportunities
  • Coordinate with Sales and Channel Marketing to develop marketing and sales collateral and tools.
  • Develop and monitor sales and margin targets for new products and manage product life cycle.
  • Acquire and maintain familiarity with the current and any new regulations that control the category including ceiling fans, light kits, and controls from the Department of Energy (DOE), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Energy Commission (CEC), Canadian regulations (NRCan) and Mexico regulations (NOM).
  • Occasionally serve as the brand representative to various organizations focused on industry matters, state and national legislative changes that impact product and strategic development direction and matters related to energy encompassing technological, legislative/code, and marketing endeavors.
  • Conduct training presentations for internal personnel, distributors, contractors, agents, end-users, and Specifiers
  • Participate in customer presentations and industry trade shows.
  • Work with Sales representatives, National Accounts, and Sales Channel teams in support of category growth opportunities.
  • Provide technical support assistance on newly launched products for internal and external customers.
  • Additional duties as required.
What will help you thrive in this role?
  • 4-year college degree required. Business, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Industrial Design preferred. MBA considered a plus.
  • 5+ years' experience in marketing or lighting industry with emphasis on Product Development and Product Management.
  • Subject matter expertise is a plus
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical, Building Energy Codes, Safety Standards (i.e., UL and CSA), Energy Standards (i.e., Energy Star, CA T20 & T24) and DOE regulations related to product category.
  • Experience with ceiling fans or related products and LED products is a plus.
  • Minimum Required knowledge or skills:
    • Must excel at interpersonal and written communications.
    • Must excel at presentation skills.
    • Must be competent with Microsoft Office Suite
    • Must be self-directed, work well collaboratively and attentive to detail.
  • Travel up to 20%, domestic and international.
