Job Description:

The Dialysis Supervisor supports the fundamentals of safety, quality, experience, and stewardship by providing clinical expertise and leadership to the department. As a part of line management, this role has significant leadership responsibilities (e.g., leading change, scheduling, maintenance of caregiver's competencies, new employee selection / orientation, constructive discipline, and completion of caregiver performance reviews). The Dialysis Supervisor has accountability for a team of caregivers and actively participates in the overall operations of the department, development of department practice, and provisions of patient care with specified accountabilities for implementation and outcomes. The incumbent actively participates in and has responsibility and accountability for partnerships and alignment with both local and system leaders to achieve quality, goals, metrics, and initiatives. The incumbent supports and enforces system policies/procedures to ensure safe, efficient, and effective patient care.

Job Essentials

Seeks and evaluates information acquired from other members of interdisciplinary team (e.g., patient, family, physician, non-nursing disciplines, support caregivers).
Develops and implements initiatives to support department continuous improvement and zero harm efforts.
Directs the interdisciplinary care team via delegation, coordination, and collaboration as appropriate.
Provides or delegates care consistent with plan of care, guidelines of care, and professional licensure provisions.
Sets priorities and coordinates and organizes patient care delivery through effectively managing time, supplies, and resources.
Evaluates the department needs for developing and implementing plans to move caregivers from novice to expert nurses in areas of practice, clinical competency, and patient experience with the support of the Dialysis Manager.
Promotes and participates in the professional development of all assigned caregivers.
Integrates legal and ethical standards into practice. Complies with regulatory standards, practices within scope of licensure, provides accurate and timely documentation, and understands legal implications of care delivery.
Supports Dialysis Manager in decisions related to needed positions, selection, retention, orientation, etc.
Projects staffing needs for current and following shift and/or department to provide optimal patient care.
Ensures that staffing levels and skill levels match the census and acuities for the department.
Ensures cost-effective use of caregivers by ensuring appropriate nurse to patient ratio and utilization of caregivers by monitoring use of premium pay, agency, cancellations, etc.
Assists caregivers with direct patient care as needed.
Forecasts and communicates accurate information on admission, discharge, and transfer to ensure appropriate patient placement.
Communicates with appropriate caregivers on difficult/challenging patients to facilitate appropriate care needs.
Responsible for the day-to-day operations, including the physical plant/facility, which may include facility monitoring, compliance to local, state, and federal regulations, licensure, facility utilities, and community relationship.
Responsible for facility/programs emergency response plan to include partnerships with emergency personnel and drills.
Promotes safety, quality, and experience for patients and caregivers.
Serves as a clinical resource to applicable caregivers.
Manages patient complaints or concerns promptly.
Responsible for initial coaching of caregivers on performance issues.
Completes and conducts performance reviews of caregivers
Supports and enforces unit policies and procedures to ensure safe, quality patient care.
Responsible for competency of caregivers (e.g., annual skills updates, ongoing educational in-services, and completion of mandatory educational requirements).
Oversees accountabilities for ongoing programs (e.g., patient experience, continuous improvement, zero harm).
Understands budgets and financial operations to include partnering with Dialysis Services Manager in budget creation and operating a program within a budget.

Minimum Qualifications

Current RN License in state of practice.
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
RNs hired or promoted into this role need to have or obtain their BSN within three years of hire or promotion.
Two years of clinical nursing experience.
Leadership and mentoring experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
Experience in a dialysis setting.
Two years of supervisory experience in a clinical nursing setting.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
- and -
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, push, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (e.g., full of equipment, power cords on the floor).
