POSITION: Controller

LOCATION: The Salvation Army SW Divisional Headquarters

STATUS: Exempt

The Controller has supervisory responsibility for all financial accounting activity and employees related to the operation of the Southwest Division of The Salvation Army. This position is benefit eligible and comes with vacation, sick, health, vision, life insurance, free membership and more.

Qualifications:

  • CPA/CMA or MBA and five or more years supervising an accounting department with preference in non-profit/fund accounting.
  • A minimum Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business Administration with ten (10) years supervisory experience in all phases of accounting with actual experience in consolidation and interaction with external auditors.
  • Preferred experience in The Salvation Army administration and personnel practices.
  • Possess an expert understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and FASB Standards pertinent to a non-profit organization.
  • The ability to operate with a Windows office suite environment, including expert knowledge of Excel and familiarity with a computer accounting and financial reporting systems, preferably Shelby accounting program and Vivid Reporting system.
  • The ability to complete multiple projects in a time sensitive manner is essential.
  • The ability to travel throughout the Southwest Division as requested.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including GL (General Ledger), AR (Accounts Receivable), and Consolidation (preparation of external financial statements) in addition to the backup for the Finance and Payroll analyst for the Southwest Division related to AP functions.
  • Oversee the day-to-day banking procedures and processes, including monitoring cash flow.
  • Prepare government contract budget proposals and any necessary reports and documents to facilitate monthly billings.
  • Responsible for the accurate filing of any pertinent accounting documents in a timely manner, especially as it pertains to government contracts.
  • Coordinate audits, including preparation of required materials by both independent, external auditors, as well as The Salvation Army internal auditors.
  • Responsible for hiring and training of Donation/AR and Intercompany/Payroll accountant and AR clerks.
  • Assist the Divisional Finance Secretary/Director in developing the long and short-term direction and focus for the accounting department.
  • Assist in the budgeting process
  • Ensure the accounting transactions are in accordance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the quarterly and annual divisional consolidation process.
  • Responsible for the accounting of any capital campaigns that may be in process.
  • Ensure all asset accounts are reconciled monthly.
  • Oversee the coding of cash reports and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure the billing, collection, and/or transmittal of all funds to THQ related to world service appeal, disasters, and outside SW division gifts
  • Prepare and approve journal entries required for maintaining accuracy in the GL and/or financial statements.
  • Supervise:
  • Donations and Receivable Accountant
  • Intercompany and Payroll Accountant
  • Communicate with, and support the field personnel in area of finance and accounting
  • Assume Finance Department supervisory responsibility in the absence of the Division Finance Secretary/Director.
  • Accounting Systems manager for Shelby, Vivid, and JAAWS. Backup management of CARE and AP Workflow
  • Ensure Portfolio reconciliations are completed monthly
  • Review and approve posting of monthly endowment and program reserve interest journal
  • Perform Other duties as assigned by the Divisional Finance Secretary/Director.

Must have the ability to operate telephone, a desktop or laptop computer, as well as the ability to access and produce information from a computer, and to understand written information.
