Job Title: Sr. Engineer Packaging

Job Location: Hershey, PA. or Mid-West preferred (Remote)

Summary:

This position is responsible for the development of various primary and secondary packaging materials. Working independently, and with vendors, the Engineer will research, develop, test and recommend various packaging design proposals for implementation at Hershey Salty Snacks manufacturing locations.

Working closely with business partners, the Engineer will create innovative solutions and support new product innovation. The position will also lead cost savings initiatives by working collaboratively with Manufacturing, Marketing, Quality and Equipment Engineering.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and people skills, strong project leadership, and technical expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Supply Chain to identify business need and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Present design recommendations to key stakeholders and drive alignment with key project stakeholders on packaging development direction.
  • Research, develop, test and implement proposals for packaging design.
  • Collaborate and lead with cross functional partners and commercialization teams to drive projects forward by researching and developing packaging solutions to meet the consumer and customer's needs.
  • Understands the relationship between the package format, food processing method, manufacturing processes and product / packaging interaction. Determines impact on new packaging design to existing and new automation at manufacturing locations. Modify designs accordingly to optimize manufacturing and labor efficiencies. Recommend, select and execute packaging designs.
  • Manage and execute multiple simultaneous packaging projects while developing a working knowledge of technologies. This includes projects related to sustaining business base, cost savings, continuous quality improvements, and innovation.
  • Develops project plans that define scope, adherence to schedule, costs, business impact and risks. Executes plans and identifies issues or obstacles, proposes solutions, gains alignment and brings to resolution. Highlights risks to project team and assists in elimination of roadblocks when encountered.
  • Identify and drive cost savings opportunities, looking both at individual component level as well as process improvements and manufacturing
  • efficiency gains.
  • Leverage and manage internal and external network to deliver solutions that meet the packaging requirements, product needs, and consumer experiences.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes; includes understanding of how packaging design changes impact processes, lead times, resource requirements, and development costs.
  • Various packaging materials experience.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal leadership, self-motivation and initiative.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BS in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related science field.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience preferred in packaging development roles of increasing responsibility, ideally in high-volume food or consumer goods.
  • Familiarity with variety of packaging materials and technologies and manufacturing processes strongly preferred.
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and unexpected requests.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills.
  • Must be comfortable working independently with limited direction.
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally up to 75% of the time.
