Job Description

Protein processor with 5 locations distributing to Retail, Foodservice, and Industrial.  Products include Beef, Chicken, and Pork, Portion Control products, Marinated Meats, Fresh Ground Beef, Fully Cooked and Raw products, and Corned Beef.

 

This position is responsible for supervising production employees to optimize quality, service, and efficiency to achieve operational excellence, in accordance with company policies and procedures. The safety, development and retention of your team is your highest priority.  As the frontline leader in logistics, production, and food safety, employee engagement, teamwork and coaching are your responsibilities. You will also coordinate with business partners to ensure a seamless flow of product and champion continuous improvement.

 

Responsibilities:

  

• Directly supervises personnel in the day-to-day production operations of the business to achieve yields, gross margins, scheduling, both raw and finished goods.  Supervises in an appropriate manner regarding all aspects of production activities, including, prioritizing duties, delegating work assignments, and scheduling employees to optimize production and sanitation functions, as necessary.  Trains and provides an environment for employees to achieve their maximum quality and productivity performance in their respective positions.

 

• Lead efforts in assigned areas of responsibility related to loss prevention, risk management, USDA compliance, and labor/employee relations. Promotes department and company goodwill through pro-active employee communication and employee involvement. As an active participant, coordinates with Human resources the recruitment, selection, training & development, and retention of qualified talent in all operational areas. Champions the training and development of existing staff to ensure engagement and succession planning bench strength as appropriate.

 

• Ensures that assigned employees are meeting Performance Measurement Standards (e.g. productivity, attendance, tardiness, safety, and quality), and communicates with employees regarding pertinent information for daily, event or seasonal business issues.  Ensures that individual employee’s productivity support business objectives and to establish an engaged workforce through the training of staff and the reduction of turnover.

 

• Works with the Operation Manager and other Supervisors to maintain knowledge of yields, quality, and variances to help realize goals on yields and efficiencies. Evaluates processes and methods, and makes recommendations on continuous improvement methods, equipment performance, utilization of people, and quality of product and safety objectives.  Acts as a technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems regarding production, quality, and work problems as appropriate.

 

• Performs routine walking and visual inspections of the production floor in observation of unsafe acts or conditions; takes immediate corrective action where necessary to develop and meet plant safety goals. Is actively involved in safety efforts including, attending safety meetings, incident investigations, assisting in root cause analysis, auditing, as assigned. Trains employees to ensure adherence to safe operating procedures. 

 

• Maintains and controls departmental supplies, tools, and equipment. Ensures the completion of all required production paperwork including corrective actions, terminations, performance records, inventory, inspection, quality reports, maintenance work orders. 

 

• Maintains adequate knowledge of products and equipment to ensure the ability to direct employees to perform the job properly, and to maintain the desired product specification requirements throughout the manufacturing process. Ensures tasks are completed in accordance with HACCP and USDA regulations, taking corrective or training actions as necessary.

Reports to:  Production Manager

 

Qualifications:

 

• 3+ years progressive leadership experience in relevant commercial food operations, preferably in a protein-related industry.

Previous food processing experience, supervisory experience, manufacturing knowledge and understanding of yields, plant efficiencies, and operations procedures, preferred.

• Proficient in MS Office Suite, and knowledge of industry product reporting systems. 

• Ability to communicate effectively and deliver presentations regarding potentially controversial issues, which involve tact, forethought, and influence positive outcomes among groups of varying positions.

Bilingual Spanish a plus.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as dictated letters or memoranda, invoices, company policies and various documentation, paying particular attention to grammar. 

Ability to process routine reports and correspondence.  

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions, and to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Must have strong leadership and mentoring skills. 

• Competent mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals accurately.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage correctly.  Ability to lead problem solving and troubleshooting efforts associated with operational-level process issues.
