Job Summary:*
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
*
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:*
* Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
* Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
* Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
* Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
* Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
* Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
* Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs
*Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:*
* Able to complete required physical demands and/or task
* Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains
* Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected
* Proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EIC’s (Employee in Charge) and assigned work group
* Proficient in performing a job briefing with all the roadway workers within their work location
* Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
* Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device
* Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)

Former NS RWIC Qualifications:*
* 20 years’ experience with last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI)/ assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years’ experience as a RWIC
*
Non-Former NS RWIC Required Education and Experience:*
* A person possessing 20 years of service as RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad
