Purpose

The Research Specialist will contribute to imaging projects (MRI and ultrasound) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the UT Austin Main Campus, Dell Seton Medical Center and Dell Children's Medical Center. The candidate will work closely with a team of engineers lead by Adam Bush, PhD and clinical collaborators spanning pediatrics, cardiology, nephrology and hematology. The Research Specialist will aid in the development, performance, and evaluation of ongoing imaging studies.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with research staff to assure that research activities are performed in accordance with federal, state, and institutional review board regulations.

  • Maintain and assist with the preparation of IRB protocols and regulatory documents.

  • Aid with research subject recruitment and consent.

  • Compile medical record information into an anonymized database.

  • Assist in the collection of physiologic, ultrasound and MRI data in children and adults with chronic illnesses.

  • Prepare and perform analysis on blood and urine samples in a wet laboratory setting.

  • Perform mechanical testing on animal and human tissues.

  • Order and organize laboratory supplies and equipment.

  • Write basic software (MATLAB, Python) to analyze and report medical imaging data.

  • Attend and contribute to weekly research team meetings.

  • Write up and present findings at international scientific conferences.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Biology, Neuroscience or related fields. Research interest in physiology and translational medical imaging in humans.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to be organized, work independently and maintain maturity and professionalism at all times when working with vulnerable patient populations.

  • Experience with Matlab and/or Python. Prior wet lab experience.

  • Must be able to pass a mandatory drug test required to work with children

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Salary Range

$45,000 + depending on qualifications
