CORP. MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST  (non-shop role)

UNION TANK CAR CO. / LEASING BUSINESS UNIT / CORP. HQ HYBRID ROLE

REQUIREMENT: HYBRID ROLE, CANDIDATE MUST LIVE IN EITHER CHICAGO OR OAKVILLE, ONTARIO TO ENABLE HYBRID SCHEDULE.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Corp. Maintenance Specialist is responsible for the timely progression of cars through repair shops robust review and approval or rejection of repair estimates. In this position, you will assist the Maintenance Manager for a given shopping event ensuring all necessary documentation and support is provided to effectively repair UTC owned equipment. The Maintenance Specialist will also act as an auxiliary to the Sr. Fleet Operations Specialist supporting daily operations for two teams within the Fleet Repair department on a variety of assignments and special projects. Daily responsibilities may shift based on the demands of the teams. The Maintenance Specialist will act as a versatile resource assisting Shop Administration and Repair Authorization & Controls.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Reviews Billing Repair Cards for accuracy, compliance and consistency across shop network.
  • Ensures repair charges are appropriate through prevention and detection controls.
  • Ensures timely, complete, and accurate lessee billing for lessee-responsible repairs.
  • Escalates repair vs. scrap determination for repair candidates based upon approved parameters.
  • Drives timely movement of cars through shop and serves as primary point of contact for shops to obtain information necessary to complete car repair once the car has been received and inspected by the shop (e.g., questions regarding material or part substitution).
  • Supports frequent reporting & analysis of common maintenance items and makes timely interventions, when necessary.
  • Tracks data and presents trends to management.
  • Assists the lessee rebill process for contract shops and acts as the liaison between internal Customer Service Representatives and the contract shop network.
  • Assists the release process for shops and facilitates movement and project completion statuses to appropriate internal and external parties.
  • Contributes to the modernization of processes through Fleet Repair Maintenance Portal (FRMS), Sharepoint, and RailcarRX.
  • Drives timely movement of cars through the Repair network. Partner with shops to provide shop status updates.
  • Research long dwell situations and identify strategic areas of improvement to mitigate repeat issues and costs.
  • Participates in special projects, run economics, creates charts and presentations as assigned.

SKILLS / SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrate clear and professional written/verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Familiarity with industry quality and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of railcar repair practices, AAR Rules, FRA Regulations, and railcar nomenclature.
  • Understanding of billing, repair practices, procedures, and welding requirements.
  • Familiarity with railcar design and components.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or HS Diploma with enhanced work experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience within the railroad industry.
  • Railcar Shop repair experience preferred.
