This is skilled work at the journeyman level with proficiency in the installation, maintenance and diagnostic repair of electrical motor control systems, lift stations, storm pumping stations, and telemetry systems. The primary responsibility of the Industrial Electrician is performing diagnostic repairs, preventative maintenance, and installation of complex motor control systems associated with pump and lift stations. Other work involves limited diagnostic repair and maintenance of traffic control systems, building electrical systems, and street lighting throughout the Town of Palm Beach. Employees are assigned to specific projects and/or maintenance tasks and are expected to apply journeyman skills in completing the project. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Utilities Maintenance Supervisor. Employees in this classification may act as lead workers or supervise unskilled helpers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Analysis, maintenance, and repair of electrical motor control systems in storm and lift stations; this includes programmable controllers, current relays, relay logic and other associated pump and motor control devices.
  • Megging and analysis of pump motors is required, including variable frequency drives (VFDs) and submersible type motors.
  • Maintenance and repair of power distribution systems including motor control centers, distribution panels, and other various power supplies
  • Works in and around electrical control cabinets with 480-volt supply voltage.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical problems relating to generators and automatic transfer switches (ATSs), including periodic megging, testing and inspection to ensure proper operation of all Town-owned generators and ATSs.
  • Calibrates various types of transducers and level control systems including Multitrode, Contegra and back up float systems.
  • Maintains telemetry systems (radio and hard wired) for pump stations and traffic monitoring.
  • Installs, tests, and maintains traffic control equipment, specifically Econolite traffic control systems and cabinets.
  • Works in Town-owned buildings diagnosing and repairing electrical problems including lighting, power, and UPS systems.
  • Works on Town-owned street lighting system diagnosing, testing, and repairing problems on an as needed basis, including various types of lighting control including time clocks and photo cells.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Electrical trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of experience as an electrician required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in installation, maintenance, and diagnostic repair of electrical motor control systems, lift stations, storm pumping stations, and telemetry systems.
  • Some supervisory experience preferred.
  • A valid State of Florida Class E Operators License required and a valid Palm Beach County or State of Florida Journeyman Electrician's License preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Considerable knowledge and skills in the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the electrical trade.
  • Considerable Knowledge of the construction and functions of a wide variety of electrical equipment used in, lift and storm stations including analysis, maintenance, and repair of electrical motor control systems associated with these stations.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the electrical trade and of necessary safety precautions including lock-out, tag-out procedures.
  • The ability to read and understand motor control schematics is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions and to read and interpret sketches, diagrams, blueprints, and motor control schematics.
  • Ability to think logically and work with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • Ability to operate and work safely from a bucket truck.
  • Ability to push and pull electrical equipment, reels, and generators weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Software skills, or equivalent systems, for the following programs:  Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook (or equivalent), and EDEN or similar enterprise database.
  • Basic computer skills to operate, monitor, and program video detection and telemetry systems.
  • Ability to see small part numbers and technical data; have distance acuity sufficient to assist in flagging traffic and seeing traffic signals; and ability to identify colors and numbers in control wiring.
