A Brief Overview

The Automation Controls Technician at Wood-Mizer will play a critical role in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing our automated manufacturing systems and industrial equipment. This position requires a combination of technical expertise in electrical and automation systems along with a strong problem-solving mindset.

What you will do

  • Installation and Integration: Install, configure, and integrate automation control systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), robotic systems, motion controllers, timber scanning and optimization systems, and other related equipment.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Perform preventive maintenance tasks, inspections, and repairs on automation control systems to ensure uninterrupted operation. Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and software issues using diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Programming and Optimization: Develop, modify, and optimize control system programs to enhance system performance, reliability, and efficiency. Implement automation solutions to streamline production processes and improve product quality.
  • System Upgrades and Retrofits: Plan and execute upgrades and retrofits to automation control systems to meet changing production requirements. Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure necessary components and equipment.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate documentation of control system configurations, program revisions, and maintenance activities. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols related to automation systems.
  • Training and Support: Provide training and technical support to production personnel on the operation and maintenance of automation control systems. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation enhancements to increase productivity, reduce downtime, and minimize waste. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and contribute ideas for innovation.
  • Travel to customer locations as needed, up to 60% of the time.


Education Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree Electronics, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field Pref

Experience Qualifications

  • 4-6 years Proven experience working with automation control systems in a manufacturing environment. Required
  • 1-3 years SCADA systems, MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), and data acquisition systems. Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), HMI development, and industrial networking protocols. (High proficiency)
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical principles, motion control systems, and robotics. (High proficiency)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues. (Medium proficiency)
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team. (Medium proficiency)
  • Knowledge of advanced control strategies such as PID control, adaptive control, and model predictive control. (Medium proficiency)
  • Familiarity with predictive maintenance techniques and reliability engineering principles. (Medium proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Automation Professional-ISA Preferred
