The Marine Science Institute is a part of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Natural Sciences, and notably the most significant marine science research facility on the Texas coast. UTMSI is internationally recognized for its academic programs and research. Our goal is to find a like-minded professional who will join in our community efforts to support the staff and students in their educational research efforts at the Marine Science Institute.

Purpose

To perform journey level skilled work in the installation, maintenance and service of HVAC systems and chiller plant and perform as a member of a team in a fast paced multi-project environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist coworkers as needed and perform as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Assist electrician to maintain and repair electrical system. Maintain lighting systems and assist coworkers in other related work projects. Drive UT vehicle to pick up supplies and equipment to job sites.

  • Balancing of the air-handlers (dampers) to maintain comfort levels in offices and lab areas.

  • Calibration to multiple heat-pumps and timers for temperature control of seawater in lab tanks.

  • Repair seawater pumps and associated motors. Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service to HVAC equipment. Yearly cleaning of evaporated coils and cooling towers.

  • Replacement of air-handler filters and belts. Daily tests of chemical feeders and blow-down pumps on cooling towers.

  • Service and repair of split system A/C systems with special emphasis on heat pump systems. Overhaul and service of HVAC equipment to include:adjust valves, piping connections, remove and install motors, thermostats, and humidistats.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Licensed by the State of Texas as a Class A or Class B journey level HVAC mechanic. Three years' experience in construction and/or maintenance and repair in a crafts trade or facilities maintenance. Your experience should include 3 years journey level HVAC and controls mechanic and 1 year of other related trades.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

HVAC experience in air conditioning, heating, controls experience, refrigeration, maintenance and repairs. More than five years of journey-level experience in a combination of trades performing installation, repairs, renovations of multiple types construction and systems. More than three years of journey level experience in one or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to receive, respond, and follow through with written and verbal work-related instructions from supervisors, customers, and co-workers.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$40,000-$50,000 depending on qualifications

  • May require occasional extended work hours or on-call

Work Shift

40 hours a week, Monday-Friday - Schedule to be determined with supervisor.

On-call and weekends as needed.
