Overview

The Magnet Program Manager is accountable for leading change efforts in collaboration with nurse leaders and team members utilizing the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Journey to Magnet Excellence framework to create and implement innovative team member engagement, systems, and processes. The Magnet Recognition Program designates hospital organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization's patient outcomes. This position will support the mission, vision, and values of the organization, professional practice, and the healthcare workplace through coordination, management, and sustainment of processes related to the Magnet Recognition application process, designation, and ongoing commitment to quality patient care.

This position provides a systemic approach to Magnet project management and implementation by developing, coordinating, and deploying all phases of the designation process:

  • Provides leadership and oversight to the planning, integration, and evaluation of Magnet program initiatives. The MPD assumes primary responsibility for ensuring organizational enculturation of the five components of Magnet Excellence: Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, New Knowledge, Innovations, and Improvements, and to promote excellence in patient care services as evidenced by Empirical Outcomes.
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains comprehensive data management systems that support information submission to the Magnet Program Office and enables accurate tracking of key performance indicators.
  • Serves as the liaison between the organization and the ANCC Magnet Program Office.

This position reports directly to the Director, Nursing Excellence, and works closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, assures that all aspects of the Magnet Journey to Magnet Excellence is sustained through all phases of the Magnet appraisal and application process. This position represents the organization at regional/national Magnet Program venues/forums.

Responsibilities

Key Accountability - Evidence-Based Professional Practice

  • Fosters a culture of interprofessional collaboration through leadership and sustainment of Shared Governance Model, aligning with organizational and nursing enterprise goals and strategy.
  • Leads Professional Practice Steering Council.
  • Acts as a knowledge expert and resource responsible for interpreting and integrating the Magnet standards into nursing practice.
  • Provides leadership, knowledge, education, and resources to the Magnet Champions and Shared Governance Councils.
  • Supports nursing professional development through the promotion of specialty certification and advanced nursing degrees.
  • Supports nursing professional development through the promotion of abstract submission, and presentations at local, state, and national conferences.
  • Encourages participation in professional research presentations and review of published findings.
  • Assists in the application of evidence-based and/or nursing research into nursing practice.
  • Works with the Director of Nursing Excellence and Chief Nursing Officer with:
    • The submission process and documentation requirements for the application, re-designation evidence submission, annual and interim reports, and the Demographic Data Collection Tool (DDCT) to meet all established deadlines set forth by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program.
    • The regular evaluation of the Nursing Professional Practice Model (PPM) and Shared Governance Model to ensure they provide a strong and relevant foundation for professional nursing practice and integrated into daily nursing practice.
  • Leads a strategic and systematic approach to Magnet project management and implementation by coordinating all phases of the designation and re-designation processes.
    • Evaluates current state of the organization's Magnet Recognition Program readiness, identifies barriers and areas of opportunity for maintaining the organization's Magnet designation.
    • Oversees data submission, outcome indicators, and RN survey requirements to support re-designation process.
    • Gathers evidence to support Magnet re-designation process.
    • Collaborates with outside consulting vendors, as necessary, to ensure a complete and accurate application submission.
    • Prepares organization for re-designation site visit.
    • Reviews and /or edits all submissions to ANCC assuring SOE documentation completeness.
  • Role models transformational leadership skills for strengthening the professional role of nursing.
  • Provides leadership as a change agent for evidence-based practice changes.
  • Serves as a nursing leader representative on organizational and/or hospital councils and committees to promote interprofessional, evidence-based, quality clinical patient care, as well as solicit information for SOEs.
  • Possesses a broad and varied knowledge base that is continually enhance through self-directed study, review of professional literature, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Assists market Chief Nursing Officer in informing annual operational budget for Shared Governance and Magnet Journey.

Key Accountability - Quality Improvement

  • Intentionally assures integration of quality improvement activities through Shared Governance Councils to drive excellence in care. Innovation and creativity is encouraged.
  • Serves as NDNQI (National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators) site coordinator

Key Accountability - Relationships

  • Collaborates with nursing leaders and team members at other UnityPoint Health organizations and serves as a nursing representative for enterprise projects.
  • Strategically establishes relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure the continued success of the Magnet Program
  • Participates in leadership forums within and outside the hospital organization.
  • Supports organizational values by recognizing employees in written and verbal modes.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) required.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing education program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in a hospital clinical practice setting.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa or compact state. Possess current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state.
  • Basic knowledge of Magnet Program requirements and Magnet Sources of Evidence.
  • Possesses basic competency in computer skills (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.)
  • Skilled at team and meeting facilitation, consensus building, and identification of concrete action steps.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
