JOB TITLE: NURSE MANAGER

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, manages and supervises functions of nursing services within region in order to ensure effective delivery of nursing services and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and procedures. Reports to a Director.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Manage supervise, and coordinate the delivery of nursing services.
Ensure compliance with clinical /patient care standards and established policies and procedures.
Observes and monitors client health; and documents treatments and/or medical concerns on the client charts.
Participates in the development of nursing services strategic and operational planning.
Participates in establishing communication between nursing staff and other health care professionals and administration.
Plans and conducts meetings with nursing staff to ensure compliance with established practices and to keep nursing staff abreast of current policies and procedures and documents such meetings.
Assist in the selection, provision and control of resources required for subsequent performance of duties to include equipment, supplies, space and facilities, ensuring cost containment and to optimize work environment.
Assists in the development of the facility infection control program and coordinates its implementation.
Serves as a professional role model and mentor to staff by responding positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change process. Serves as a change agent to facilitate communication and transition that supports the mission of the organization.
Maintains required records, reports and statistics for administrative purposes in order to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, quality improvement and infection control.
Participates in the development and enforcement of all applicable nursing services policies and procedures.
Conducts various personnel action including but not limited to, hiring, orientation/training, performance appraisals, disciplinary action, termination and other related activities.
Provide feedback and education to nursing staff regarding expectation and duties.
Participates in various facility wide meetings and committees on an as needed basis.
Plan, schedule and organize work for nurses at the designated campus ensuring proper delegation and assignment of personnel, space and facilities.
Approves leaves and overtime of all nursing staff.
Coordinates the activities of nursing staff with other team members in order to provide efficient delivery of nursing care services including ensuring that orders, treatments, plans of care are being carried out.
Ensures documentation of nursing care services is complete and accurate in accordance with hospital and unit organizational policies and procedures.
Secures necessary medical and dental services for clients. Attends scheduled appointments with clients as needed.
Assists the psychiatrist when conducting medication assessments and reviews.
Maintains clinical competency and provides direct care services when needed.
Performs a variety of duties associated with the administration of client medications to include obtaining prescribed medications from a Pharmacist; administering medications to clients; providing information about medications; obtains medications for home administration; monitoring medication changes; and observing patient reactions to new medications.
Attends to clients who admit themselves as being sick (Sick call).
Contacts parents or legal guardians to discuss client medical issues, status of health conditions and treatments received.
Provides hepatitis vaccines to Grafton staff.
Conducts in service staff training related to nursing and health issues; teaches medication administration and related medication issues and practices to staff.
Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provide nursing staff backup on an as needed basis, in other Grafton locations.
Prepares and/or completes a variety of health services forms such as medication permission forms, on-call sheets, doctor/dentist appointment sheets, etc.
Completes audits to ensure accurate medical documentation as assigned.
Participates in the On-call rotation
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires:

Associate’s degree in Nursing required; BSN or MSN preferred
1-2 years demonstrated experience as a nurse manager
1-2 years psychiatric nursing experience
Experience developing procedures, hiring, staff development and coordinating activities of physicians and/or physician extenders
Or a combination of the above requirements to perform this position TBD by facility.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Licensure as a Registered Nurse
Knowledge of Medicaid regulations; Understanding of PRTF and residential treatment service delivery. Working knowledge of licensing and accreditation standards. Prefer experience with Virginia Department of Mental Retardation, Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Council of Accrediting Residential Facilities (CARF).
To become a certified Master Trainer in Medications management (training provided by Grafton)
A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
