Job Summary

This position plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our fiber services to customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform prep and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for both inside and outside plant construction.
  • Perform fiber panel audits and splice case audits.
  • Properly place mid-sheath splices.
  • Test and troubleshoot fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope.
  • Perform installation and testing of fiber cross connects
  • Work with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design to perform splicing as directed.
  • Provide Fiber Design team with detailed reports of field splicing activity.
  • Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NESC and NEC, etc.; as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical, Operations, and Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook).
  • Clean, maintain, stock and secure equipment.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in engineering, permit and construction processes.
  • Construct proper splice cases pressurized and non-pressurized, using all types and sizes of cable, including, but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
  • Make precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables and provide input into construction methodologies.
  • Assist in scheduling splicing jobs with Construction Managers and/or Fiber Design.
  • Assist in training and support for Fiber Splicer I-II.
  • In coordination with Construction Manager, prepare required Wimps needed with the NOC for all maintenance splicing required.
  • Work with Fiber Design on required parts and equipment.
  • Work flexible hours as needed and on-call rotation which may include nights and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.

Requirements/Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • 5+ year of splicing experience with the ability to properly place a mid-sheath splice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope.
  • Ability to climb poles using gaffs and climbing belt as needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to adhere to Local and Federal regulations and company policies.
  • Strong organizational skills are required with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
  • Basic computer skills and understanding of Outlook, Excel, Word and the Google Suite (Docs, Drive and Mail).
  • Perform prep and fusion of Ribbon fiber.
  • Intermediate understanding of proper safety construction practices.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends, as well as on call rotation.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with team members.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment without supervision.
  • Ability to drive company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Valid driver's license and auto insurance with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to live within 30 miles, or maximum of 1-hour commute during regular commuting hours from the assigned territory. Territories are defined by management and can be altered at any time.
  • This position is in the Seattle Metro area the majority of the time, but the prospective employee will also be required to work in King County region.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to carry, climb and operate an extension ladder (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds).
  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work while standing 50 - 70% of the time.
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e. towers and roofs).
  • Ability to be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects and cleaning solutions.
  • Ability to work in poorly ventilated during extreme heat.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and all times of the day or night.
  • Ability to work near power lines and electricity.
  • Ability to work and travel in inclement weather.

The base salary range in Washington for this position is $21.00 - $45.00/hr, plus opportunities for bonus, benefits and commission, if applicable. The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities. It is specific to Washington and may not be applicable to other locations.

  • Fiber Splicing Technician I: $21.00-$41.00/hr
  • Fiber Splicing Technician II: $25.00-$44.00/hr
  • Fiber Splicing Technician III: $ 31.00-$45.00/hr
