Job Summary

Limited supervision over student assistants and groundskeepers as it relates to horticulture. Propagate, cultivate, and care of annuals, perennials, ornamental trees, and shrubs. Apply chemicals and fertilizers to landscape beds. Assist in overseeing the campus horticultural efforts.

Temporary employees are employed according to departmental need and the length of time will vary by workload and may not exceed 1300 hours worked in a 12-consecutive month period.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active plant nursery and greenhouse for campus beautification
  • Plan with superintendent for propagation, cultivation, preparation, and maintenance of annual and perennial growth
  • Perform technical work related to hosting and maintaining a wide variety of perennials and ornamentals
  • Assist in designing and installing landscape beds, as well maintain current landscape bed
  • Direct and participate in campus ornamental and perennial pest and fertilization applications
  • Apply broad spectrum herbicides to landscape beds, hardscapes, walkways, and roadways
  • Ability to operate small engine equipment such as backpack blowers, string trimmers and hedge trimmers

Shift Specifics
  • 19 hours per week
  • Flexible with schedule of availability


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Experience
  • Knowledge of horticultural practices
  • Knowledge of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annual plant material
  • Functional knowledge of common and botanical names of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, insects, and pest disease


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience
  • 5 or more years Horticultural working experience involving propagation, landscape bed design, greenhouse management, plant nursery management

Proposed Salary

$23.00 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
