Sr. Distinguished Engineer - Network Security

The Senior Distinguished Engineer will represent the Network Security Engineering team across the peer community within Capital One Technology including Cyber Security, Enterprise Platforms & Technology, Associate Experience, and other partner areas. Additionally, the Senior Distinguished Engineer will also partner closely with Product, Risk, and Program Management on the timely delivery of technology solutions that may be bought or built as appropriate.
The domain covers the enterprise network security platforms within the secure access services, perimeter defense, network defense, and platform evolution areas of the organization.
Example technologies relevant to the role include:
- Public Cloud Technologies (including multi cloud & hybrid connectivity)
- General OSI coverage, eg IPv4, IPv6, DNS threats & DNSSec, L4 Security, HTTP & related protections (API Security, WAF, Bot, API, Edge & Compute)
- IPS/IDS, Firewalls, Zero Trust, Context Aware Access, VPN technologies, NAC, Web proxies, CASB, SASE, DDoS
- Application of ingress & egress protection platforms at the organizational perimeter
- Understanding of adjacent technologies such as endpoint, identity, cyber operations, crypto, identity, and DLP.

- Deep technical experts and thought leaders that help accelerate adoption of the very best engineering practices, while maintaining knowledge on industry innovations, trends and practices

- Evangelists, both internally and externally, helping to elevate the Distinguished Engineering community and establish themselves as a go-to resource on given technologies and technology-enabled capabilities
Responsibilities:
- Implementation of network security platforms and ability to define network standards at an enterprise level for a global organization running in multiple clouds or as a hybrid cloud organization
- Build awareness, increase knowledge and drive adoption of modern technologies, sharing consumer and engineering benefits to gain buy-in
- Strike the right balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where others' ideas can be heard and championed; leverage expertise to grow skills in the broader Capital One team
- Promote a culture of engineering excellence, using opportunities to reuse and innersource solutions where possible
- Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholders across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization
- Operate as a trusted advisor for a specific technology, platform or capability domain, helping to shape use cases and implementation in an unified manner
- Lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting external talent to bolster Capital One's Tech talent
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree
- At least 9 years of software engineering or software development experience within the network security domain including the creation or evolution of network security tooling, or automation of processes through the use of programming languages or shell scripts
- At least 9 years of experience with Network Security Engineering
- At least 5 years of public cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters Degree
- 12+ years of software engineering or software development experience within the network security domain including the creation or evolution of network security tooling, or automation of processes through the use of programming languages or shell scripts
- 12+ years of experience with Network Security Engineering
- 7+ years of experience in building distributed systems and highly available services using cloud computing services (AWS, GCP, Azure)
