POSITION PURPOSE: This is an entry level position for prospective Mechanics and Operating Engineers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Cogeneration Plant (BNYCP). Apprentice Operating Engineers are assigned to work shifts in both Operations and Maintenance Departments on an alternating basis. Position assigned to be trained by and aid Assistant Operating Engineers for Operations shifts and Mechanics for Maintenance shifts to obtain general overall training in power plant operations and routine maintenance functions.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Through On-the-Job-Training (OJT) and/or assigned formal technical training, responsible to become fully knowledgeable and competent to perform the basic duties of a Mechanic.
  2. Assist with and learn how to perform equipment installations, adjustments, repairs, which includes conducting acceptance and performance tests on new or existing equipment.
  3. Review equipment maintenance history records and report findings. Assist in performing routine and emergency Project equipment maintenance.
  4. Learn to identify equipment operating and/or maintenance problems and recommend equipment operating and/or maintenance changes and solutions that will enhance plant performance and availability.
  5. Learn how to use the CMMS (Maximo) to support the Work Management process.
  6. Maintain safety equipment stations such as eye wash stations and fire extinguishers.
  7. Learn and serve as a Confined Space Entry Observer as needed.
  8. Responsible to perform the necessary housekeeping functions for the Plant, including specifically trash removal and grounds upkeep, and clean up duties in the following areas at a minimum: office, shop, control room, restrooms, locker room, hallways and stairs.
  9. Assist Storekeeper with tool inventories, moving heavy materials and with other miscellaneous duties as required.
Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Required to enroll in the Apprentice Operating Engineer program with Local 30 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • One (1) year of work experience in a technical or mechanically related job.
