Job Summary

Children and young adults can develop a variety of respiratory diseases due to triggers like infections, inflammation, or lung toxicity from inhalations or medications. These respiratory diseases can manifest as trouble breathing, low oxygen, or even need for hospitalization or admission to the intensive care unit. The children most susceptible to having trouble breathing are those with complex medical conditions such as cancer, immune system problems, prematurity, or genetic syndromes. UCSF is a leader in pediatric pulmonary disorders and we are committed to improving the care of these children through scientific research.

In order to learn more about lung disease in children, we are conducting a number of translational research studies involving human biological samples collected from children treated at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and partner institutions. Respiratory samples are taken "from the bedside to the bench" where we analyze bulk- and single-cell DNA, RNA, and protein expression and correlate our findings with patient characteristics and outcomes. Patient samples harbor immune cells, lung cells, epithelial cells, and a vibrant microbiome that we are just beginning to explore! We aim to improve our understanding of lung diseases in children and form hypotheses that could alter our approach to diagnosis and treatment. So far we have identified previously unrecognized infectious pathogens as well as patterns of destructive inflammation in our patients that are associated with poor clinical outcomes. Our work is funded by the NIH and has been recently published in journals including Nature Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, Blood, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

This candidate will work in the laboratory of Dr. Matt Zinter, Assistant Professor in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Dr. Joseph DeRisi, Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics and President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. The laboratory is located at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus and is adjacent to the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. The ideal candidate for this position will be interested in helping critically ill children and will be trained in basic laboratory techniques including an ultra-sterile approach to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, ELISA, and quantification & purification methods. Additional skills such as cell preparation and flow cytometry will be taught. Meticulous precision, technical accuracy, reliability, and a willingness to learn are of the utmost importance.

The ideal candidate will be interested in attending graduate or medical school and will benefit from being in a large vibrant laboratory group of technicians, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, and physicians. Our team is multidisciplinary and we all learn from each other. The ideal candidate will be interested in learning about pulmonary biology and physiology and forming scientific ideas that can be tested and explored in the laboratory setting. The candidate is expected to assist with data presentations for laboratory meetings and with the generation of scientific manuscripts. Biostatistics and bioinformatics training may be very useful but are not required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
