Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished and experienced health and science journalist to join its Well+Being desk.
We're looking for a health reporter who is passionate about service journalism and reporting on topics that are highly relevant to readers' daily lives. This job requires the experience to cover a range of topics, including nutrition, weight loss drugs, fitness, internet wellness trends, chronic illness, cancer and other physical and mental health topics.
This reporter will routinely be asked to tackle fast-turnaround news on a variety of health topics but will also have time to develop specialty beats and short- and long-term enterprise reporting. We're looking for someone who is a fount of creative story ideas on issues that matter most to readers.
If it sounds like a big job, that's because it is. Washington Post readers have high interest in Well+Being stories, and we're looking for a franchise reporter who can become a voice of authority on personal health.
Responsibilities:
- Identifying and producing quick-turn stories on trending personal health news.
- Writing insightful, timely features that have impact and drive conversations on social media.
- Producing deeply reported enterprise stories and visually compelling service journalism.
- Developing expertise in key subject areas related to personal health.
- Tracking medical journals to discover high-interest, timely health research.
- At least 5 years of experience reporting on health or science related topics for a national publication. While health reporting experience is a priority, we will consider candidates with a strong track record of reporting on another beat who have a passion for health.
- Experience covering both breaking news and deeply reported features and enterprise.
- A knack for reader-focused journalism that distills scientific research into practical, actionable advice.
- A track record of creative ideas and fresh approaches to storytelling that surprise and delight, including experience with visual journalism and new storytelling formats.
- A high level of enthusiasm and passion for health service journalism.
