About the Job


Summary: Perform research, aid with management and maintenance of the Mendonca research group. Collaborate closely with current team members to troubleshoot experimental problems, analyze data, and develop innovative approaches to advance lab goals. Help train current and incoming members of the lab on techniques and protocols of the lab. Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, taking initiative on individual tasks while also actively participating in team projects and initiatives.

Essential Functions:
Research: 60%
Perform a variety of molecular and biochemical analyses on human or animal specimens,
including fluorescence microscopy analysis.
Isolate, purify, and culture specimens using sterile techniques following standard operation
procedures.
Grow and maintain stable cell cultures and lines as needed.
Keep detailed records of all experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks, databases, spreadsheets, and web-based applications.
Conduct background literature research on relevant topics including current methods, reagents, and ethics.

Admin/Management: 20%
Help monitor and train undergraduate student workers.
Assists in ordering items for lab and following up purchases.
Assists in general organization and administration of day-to-day activities of the lab.

Maintenance 20%:
Maintains lab in good working conditions and ensures other members of lab also do so.
Prepare media, enzymes, and solutions under sterile conditions in large quantities.

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years. Must have at least one year of experience with CRISPR and Mammalian Tissue Culture.

The department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and cancer; developing novel strategies in biocatalysis and biotechnology; and advancing knowledge through structural biology and molecular biophysics.
