Job Summary

Location: Detroit, MI

This position is responsible for the management and improvement of instrumentation and controls across the DTE Biomass portfolio of projects. The individual will work collaboratively with controls engineers and operators within DTE Biomass to quickly diagnose electrical and controls problems and continuously improve the performance of the plants. Attention to detail, especially with the correct metering of renewable natural gas ("RNG"), will be critical to success. This position will report to the Director of Technical Services. While work hours are primarily during normal daylight hours flexibility of work hours will be necessary.

This position will be hybrid if the candidate is located in the metro Detroit area, otherwise will be remote with travel to DTE sites.

This position will assist with the design, manage installation and assist with the optimization of electronic control systems and instruments to automate and monitor RNG and biomass power generation processes. Assist with the development of technical designs, process diagrams, SCADA block diagrams, and control schematics to implement automation controls. In addition, configure systems using PLC and HMI techniques and model, test, and measure output and data to analyze performance or quality issues and develop solutions. This position oversees and coordinates project resources for system start-ups, maintenance, and upgrades and ensures that instrument data sheets, wiring designs, drawings, and plans are documented.

Key Accountabilities
  • Analyze, identify deficiencies, and improve plant safety systems and programming related to instrumentation and controls
  • Perform advanced electrical and controls problem solving to ensure safe and reliable operation of assets
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs varied and complex controls and tasks involved in the operation of the plant including upgrades to PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, and electrical equipment
  • Assists with the development and improvement of new and existing SCADA architecture
  • Review and approve P&ID and electrical drawings for new and existing projects ensuring all controls and electrical requirements meet best practices
  • Work collaboratively with control engineers to further develop DTE Biomass electrical and control standards for new projects and existing plants
  • Support instrumentation and controls analysis and interpretation to ensure accurate and precise data is available to support EPA and CARB reporting requirements
  • Analyzes and interprets data to make sound, cost-effective judgments on day-to-day and long-term operational issues; particular focus to methane measurement and balance through processing to RNG
  • Analyzes and improves operations business processes, utilizing information about market dynamics and competitors' processes and achievements
  • Employee will be required to respond to plant upset conditions outside of normal business hours, work unscheduled overtime and may occasionally be required to travel to other work locations using personal transportation
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 7 years power plant experience in instrument, controls, and electrical maintenance.
  • Associate degree or industry-recognized certificate (i.e., the completion of a core group of course designated by the institution) in a related discipline is preferred and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 5 years power plant experience in instrument, controls, and electrical maintenance, or
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 3 years power plant experience in instrument, controls, and electrical maintenance.
Other Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Previous knowledge and experience with RNG and associated processes

Other Requirements:

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Ability to read mechanical and electrical prints, P&IDs, and conduct advanced electrical trouble shooting and controls enhancements
  • Solid background in instrumentation and controls, flow meters, control valves, PLC, ladder logic, calibration, VFD, 4-20 mA signals
  • Strong industrial skill set, including electrical troubleshooting, PLC knowledge, gas compressor maintenance and operations, flow meter operations, valves, gas chromatographs, etc.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate information, solve problems, and make sound ethical decisions in the difference areas of project management
  • Strong administrative skills, basic computer skills, purchasing and operator logs
  • Safety Background/Understanding: Understanding of OSHA requirements, developing a good safety culture, and implementing safety improvements
  • Interpersonal skills, maintaining a good relationship with the dairy host, the community, and employees will be essential to success
  • Skill in planning, coordinating, and directing varied programs and tasks directly effecting the overall plant operation
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to hearing protection, hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses or goggles, flame-resistant/arc flash uniform, gloves, vest, gas monitor, respirator.
  • May be required to use respiratory protection. Use of certain respirators require employee to be clean shaven (except for facial hair that does not affect the respirator seal) when reporting to work.

Works both in a business office setting and at a plant site. Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may become lout at the plant site. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery.
