About the Job


Description of Position
The pharmacist role at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, clinical services, and teaching. The pharmacist assists the director of pharmacy in operation, clinical and distributive practices.
Further, the pharmacist prepares accurate and complete patient profiles; reviews drug and dosage; reviews drug profiles with technicians, students, practitioners; teaches and supervises students; and effectively performs safe procurement, preparation, labeling, distribution, and control of drugs by the University of Minnesota Veterinary Pharmacy.

Essential Functions

Clinical Functions 90%

Drug distribution
Provides accurate filling and dispensing of drugs and supplies from the pharmacy area.
Monitor drug therapy to evaluate appropriateness of use, dose, dosage form, route, frequency, duration, and species dependent factors for drug therapy.
Reconciliation and quality assurance activities for drugs filled in previous day
Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounded prescriptions including injectables, capsules, and suspensions.
Monitor, audit, troubleshoot technical errors, and ensure dispensing machine inventory
Provide customer education to clients regarding their pet's medication(s).
Performs controlled substance audits and reconciliation within the veterinary medical center.
Perform regular audits of controlled substances and reconcile discrepancies.
Assist technical personnel in accurately filling medications, answering phone calls, assisting clients with medication pick-up.

Clinical intervention
Develop, approve, interpret, and enforce hospital and departmental policies and procedures to implement and achieve service objectives.
Ensure regulatory compliance in dispensing practices to Minnesota Board of pharmacy and DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) which includes regular audits, and drug reconciliation.
Provide drug information to practitioners, students, technicians, and clients
Provide referring veterinarian consults and advise over the phone
Implement and provide dosing services to oncology area for low therapeutic index drug
Serve as a resource for College researchers regarding drug utilization in studies including study design, product selection, study protocols, etc.
Assists in developing and maintaining hospital information system modules for dispensary and inventory and provides related training.
Serves on university and hospital committees and task forces as requested.
Assures pharmacy is an integral part of the health-care delivery system and facilitates enhancement and expansion of pharmacy services/programs.
Serve as the liaison between the Hospital and Colleges on all medication related matters. * May coordinate and/or teach courses in the College.
Facilitates experiential education and practice advancement.
Develops student, resident, and staff training experiences/competencies and creates new relationships for teaching and training opportunities.
Participate in local, regional, state, and/or national professional associations.

Inventory and Supply
Assist in the assessment, development, and maintenance of the hospital formulary.
Assist in developing and overseeing policies and procedures for drug purchasing, drug usage, drug distribution, and drug control.
Assists with contracts, procures, creates policies for, and trains staff on, Automated Dispensing equipment.
Facilitates specialty medication procurement, ordering, and dispensing procedures including but not limited to chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, controlled substances, etc.

Legal and Compliance - 10%

Indirect supervision of professional staff, technical and student staff in the Pharmacy
Oversee the documentation and processing of recalled or expired drugs, including hazardous and controlled medications.
Assist in establishing and maintaining a contemporary, exemplary pharmacy service to serve as a suitable environment for training veterinary students, interns, and residents.
Work with pharmacy director and supervisor to assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements (Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration, Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine, Ramsey County Hazardous Waste, etc.).
Work with supervisors to assure compliance with standards of practice from accreditation organizations - The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Council on Education.



Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
BA/BS degree plus at least eight years of experience, or an advanced degree plus at least six years of experience, or a terminal degree plus at least two years of experience. Minnesota Pharmacist licensure is required.

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine. The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.
