The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Department of Dental Anesthesia is seeking a full-time Register Nurse to work daytime hours, Monday through Friday. The ideal candidate will have experience in anesthesia, critical care or emergency room services; work well within a team and possess excellent communication skills with a wide variety of people.

Job Summary

Performs patient care tasks that require nursing skills, assesses and evaluates illnesses and injuries, administers medications, and provides referrals. Collaborates with staff in departmental development of health and clinical services policies and procedures. Assists physicians and clinical staff, charts orders, coordinates services, documents treatments, and utilizes an electronic database. Maintains inventory and creates supply orders. Ensures policy and procedural compliance with all health regulations.


Essential Functions

The Department of Dental Anesthesiology Registered Nurse will work with the department faculty, residents and staff to provide a full spectrum of ambulatory anesthesia services to a variety of patients and settings. Anesthesia services will primarily consist of general anesthesia delivered to children, adults, and patients of all ages with special healthcare needs. Specific duties will include:

* Setting up and maintaining the anesthesia workspace, ensuring all patient information, instruments, supplies, and monitors are present and available for patient care.

* Maintain timely and highly consistent clinical records, supply and drug inventories, outcomes data.

* Gathering patient histories, providing preoperative and postoperative instructions and follow up calls.

* Communicating with patients and caregivers throughout all phases of care in a compassionate and effective manner.

* Assisting anesthesiologists throughout the entire perioperative period.

* Work with anesthesiologists to oversee patient scheduling.

* Oversee clinical outcomes reporting.

* Collect and manage reports of adverse events, near misses and good catches.

* Collect data on compliance with infection control practices.


Physical Effort

This position requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching as well as lifting and supporting patients. Able to hold and maneuver dental instruments and medical equipment.
